Mandoon Shiraz

Intense | Rich | Plush

Crafted from two blocks of old vine Shiraz planted nearly 70 years ago in the Swan Valley, the Mandoon Old Vine Shiraz 2021 represents the pinnacle of concentration and depth. The old vines, planted in bony gravel soils, produce low-yielding fruit that is full of concentrated flavours, while an additional block of fruit from 30km north adds further complexity. These two blocks, with their unique terroir and complementary qualities, create a wine that is both powerful and refined.

Why You Will Love It:

  • Old Vine Concentration: The vines’ age and the vineyard’s bony gravel soils result in low yields and exceptional concentration, leading to a wine with great depth and intensity.
  • Rich & Plush Texture: The wine offers an opulent mouthfeel, with a blend of ripe fruits and a refined tannin structure, creating a smooth and silky finish.
  • Complex Layers: Dark fruits like raspberry, plum, and mulberry are enhanced by dark chocolate, spice, and subtle nuances of cedar and vanillin from oak maturation.

Tasting Notes:

The 2021 Mandoon Old Vine Shiraz opens with an aromatic bouquet of raspberry, plum, and mulberry, complemented by undertones of dark chocolate, blackberry, and a hint of spice. On the palate, rich and opulent fruit layers of raspberry, plum, and blackberry unfold seamlessly, supported by fine French oak and delicate dark chocolate notes. The wine’s ripe fruit and well-integrated oak tannins create a smooth, full-bodied mouthfeel, leading to a long, flavoursome finish.

Review:

  • Ray Jordan (96 points): A most attractive Shiraz from these old vines planted in the Swan Valley nearly 70 years ago. A supple and generously fleshy Shiraz loaded with deeply concentrated plush plummy and slightly spicy fruit… The palate is rich and plush with the French oak and chalky tannins holding it to a long finish.
  • The Real review (95 Points): Deep and bright red-purple colour; a very attractive bouquet of brown spices and dark fruits all melded nicely, with lovely fruit sweetness in the mid-palate that merges harmoniously with fine, drying, powdery tannins towards the finish. Superb balance and style. A ripping shiraz.

Food Pairing Suggestions:

  • Grilled Meats: Pair with rich, grilled steaks, roast lamb, or a charcoal-grilled rib-eye for an excellent contrast between the wine’s plush fruit and the savoury flavours of the meat.
  • Barbecued Dishes: Enjoy alongside BBQ ribs or a smoked brisket, where the wine’s fruit intensity will balance the charred flavours.
  • Hard Cheeses: Serve with aged cheddar, gouda, or parmesan to complement the wine’s rich and complex profile.
  • Hearty Stews: Perfect with a beef stew, braised short ribs, or a rich game meat dish like venison.

Best Serving Temp:

Serve at 16°C – 18°C to allow the full spectrum of flavours to emerge and for the tannins to soften, enhancing the wine’s opulence.

Additional Information:

  • Grape Variety: Shiraz
  • Region: Swan Valley, Western Australia
  • Alcohol: 14.5% by Vol
  • Closure: Screwcap
  • Vintage: 2021
  • Volume: 750ml

Decanting Suggestions:

To open up the wine’s full range of flavours, consider decanting for 1 to 2 hours. This will allow the wine to breathe and help soften any remaining tannic structure, making it even more approachable and enjoyable.
