Old Vines • Peppery Energy

From old vines first planted in 1975 on the Redbrook vineyard, this is one of the most decorated Western Australian Shiraz releases you will see at this price level. It is inky, perfumed and powerful, yet beautifully poised, with whole bunch spice, purple fruit, chalky tannins and classic Margaret River savouriness. A rare wine from rare vines, built to impress now and reward patience in the cellar.

Awards & Accolades 🏆

96 Points – Ray Jordan
“This is such a good wine from these old vines on the Redbrook Vineyard, planted back in 1975. On the nose, there’s some lifted florals, cocoa, dark chocolate, and spicy plum. It’s a compelling weave of aromatics. The palate is quite sublime: plush and richly textured with a grainy, slightly gravelly tannin feel, but at the same time, it’s seamlessly structured and greatly poised. This is a first rate example of what can be achieved in Margaret River with shiraz.”

93 Points – Wine Companion
“An excellent dark purple hue; smells of hot asphalt, just as the roadworkers are about to spread the surface out. Blackcurrant compote, eucalyptus and licorice. A lot to this. Full bodied, concentrated flavour, with plentiful tannins, baking spices, warm earth and a little juicy acidity keeping this buoyant. Very much in a youthful phase, so this will garner more complexity with cellaring, and it needs it.”

Tasting Notes 🍇

Colour
Inky purple black with a dense red rim. Youthful and vibrant.

Aroma
Vibrant floral lift with mulberry, blood plum and blackcurrant compote. Cocoa, dark chocolate and licorice sit alongside savoury elements of fresh earth, peat, hot asphalt and white peppercorns. A little eucalyptus and warm spice add extra complexity.

Palate
Medium to full bodied with extraordinary drive and length. Plush, richly textured dark fruits (mulberry, blood plum, blackcurrant) are wrapped in a grainy, slightly gravelly tannin frame. Baking spices, warm earth, peat and white pepper bring a savoury, textural edge, while a line of juicy acidity keeps everything bright and buoyant.

Finish
Long, poised and chalky. Succulent tannins and dark fruit flavours run through a persistent, dry finish that shows both power and restraint.

Cellaring
Peak drinking now to 2035. This is already compelling in its youth, but extra complexity will unfold with time in the cellar.

Vintage, Vineyard & Winemaking 🌱

Region
Margaret River, Western Australia
Sub region focus: Wilyabrup

Vineyards

  • Made from vineyards in the Wilyabrup sub region

  • Majority from the mature Redbrook vineyard, planted in 1975

  • Old vines with low yields and concentrated fruit

Vintage 2023
Winter 2022 was cooler than average, giving the vines a proper dormancy and setting them up for a strong growing season. Rainfall was lower than average but enough to recharge dams and soil. The growing season that followed allowed Shiraz to ripen with excellent balance, concentration and natural acidity, without major disease pressure.

Winemaking

  • Hand picked fruit

  • Cold soaked with just over 50 percent whole bunches in the base of the ferment

  • Wild fermentation for the first 20 percent of ferment, then over seeded with yeast to build layers of aroma, flavour and texture

  • Fermentation managed to protect perfume and savoury spice while extracting fine tannin

  • Aged in seasoned large format (500 L) French oak puncheons for 10 months

    • No new oak, preserving perfumed, savoury and peppery aromatics that define the Redbrook Shiraz style

Technical

  • Variety: Shiraz

  • Alcohol: 14.5 percent

  • pH: 3.48

  • TA: 6.41 g/L

  • Vegan friendly: Yes

Serving & Cellaring ❄️

  • Serving temperature: 16 to 18 °C

  • Decanting: 1 to 2 hours strongly recommended in the first few years to let the aromatics and tannins fully unfurl

  • Cellaring: Drink now for plush fruit and vibrant spice, or cellar comfortably to 2035 for more savoury, complex layers of earth, leather and game

Food Pairing Suggestions 🍽️

  • Slow cooked lamb shoulder with rosemary and garlic

  • Chargrilled rib eye or scotch fillet with pepper sauce

  • Smoky beef brisket or barbecued short ribs

  • Dark mushroom and thyme ragout with creamy polenta

  • Hard cheeses such as vintage cheddar, manchego or pecorino

FAQ 🧐

Is it a big, heavy Shiraz?
It has serious depth and concentration, but the style is more about poise and structure than sheer weight. The whole bunch ferment and chalky tannins keep it fresh and energetic rather than jammy.

How does it compare to Barossa or McLaren Vale Shiraz?
Margaret River Shiraz tends to be more medium to full bodied with pepper, florals and savoury earth, rather than the super rich, high octane style. This wine leans into that cool coastal personality, with perfume and structure as much as power.

Will it suit someone who likes Cabernet?
Yes. The tannin profile, earthiness and line of acidity will feel very familiar to Cabernet drinkers, but with a plusher, more spicy dark fruit profile.

A first rate, old vine Margaret River Shiraz with serious pedigree, top shelf accolades and the kind of structure that promises a long, rewarding future in the cellar.
