We are very lucky to have a limited amount of this 95 point Museum Release available. The Galafrey Merlot of 2017 is a beautiful example of what Great Southern Merlot can do with time in bottle: concentrated and dense, yet fine, elegant and lingering. Made from original Ag Department Merlot clones and matured in 100 percent seasoned French oak, it has developed real sophistication while keeping that cool vintage poise and line.

This is not a simple, fruity Merlot. It is structured, savoury and deeply layered, with the kind of length that makes you pause between sips.

Appearance
Deep ruby with a garnet edge showing early signs of graceful development.

Aromatics
Redolent of cacao nibs and mulberry, with dark plum, dried herbs and a gentle savoury lift. Subtle notes of cedar, mocha and earth sit underneath, adding complexity without heaviness.

Palate
Concentrated and dense, yet beautifully controlled. Mulberry and dark cherry flow through the centre, supported by cocoa, spice and savoury notes. The seasoned French oak is seamlessly integrated, allowing the fruit and structure to lead. Fine tannins provide shape and persistence, giving the wine intensity and line rather than bulk.

Finish
Structured and lingering, with classy layering of flavour that rolls on and on. A lovely, mature Great Southern red.

2017 was a cool vintage, and it shows here in the best way. The wine carries fine detail, elegance and freshness, with tannins that feel refined rather than thick. Bottle age has softened the edges and brought everything into harmony, while keeping the wine’s natural drive and length intact.
