Henty View Shiraz 2022

The Henty View Shiraz “Eleven” is a stunning, medium to full-bodied wine crafted to showcase the best of the Geographe region. With careful attention to vineyard practices and picking at the optimal time, this Shiraz delivers an exceptional balance of fruit intensity and elegance.

On the nose, the wine offers a complex and inviting bouquet of blueberries, cherries, chocolate, and a touch of cinnamon, creating a rich aromatic profile that promises depth and warmth. Flavours of plum and liquorice emerge on the palate. The combination of ripe, dark fruits and the subtle spice notes makes this Shiraz both approachable and intriguing. The palate is wonderfully balanced, with the velvety tannins giving way to a long, satisfying finish. The oak influence is perfectly integrated, adding a touch of complexity without overwhelming the fruit character. Aged in 1-2 year-old American and French oak for 12 months, this wine has developed delicate and well-rounded oak flavours that support, rather than dominate, the overall profile.

The 2022 “Eleven” Shiraz was co-fermented with a small amount of Viognier, a technique that enhances the aromatic profile, imparting more fragrance and complexity to the wine. The small addition of Viognier is a traditional method used in the Northern Rhône to elevate the floral notes and add vibrancy to the Shiraz. This meticulous winemaking process ensures that the wine is not only rich and bold but also elegant and nuanced.

The Henty View Shiraz “Eleven” of 2022 has already gained recognition at the prestigious WA Alternative Varieties Wine Show 2024, where it was awarded a Gold Medal and named Best Geographe Shiraz. These accolades are a testament to the quality and craftsmanship behind this exceptional wine.

The bold yet smooth profile of this Shiraz pairs wonderfully with grilled meats, slow-cooked stews, or roast lamb. The rich fruit and oak profile also make it a great match for hard cheeses like aged cheddar or parmesan. For a more adventurous pairing, try it with a dark chocolate dessert or spiced berry compote.

Ferguson Wine Region

The Ferguson Valley and surrounds (Geographe) sits about 15 to 30 mins East and Southwest of Bunbury and is home to a number of small boutique wineries. It’s majestic rolling hills, and the changes between the prevailing summer easterlies to the afternoon sea breeze makes for a diverse set of microclimates.

The Geographe region has a rich and vibrant history in grape cultivation, earning its esteemed wine appellation status in 1999. While relatively young, this appellation has increasingly attracted new winemakers since the 2000s. Named after Geographe Bay, initially explored by French navigator Baudin in 1801 aboard his ships, the Geographe and the Naturaliste, the region now hosts 57 winegrowers, 26 producers, and cultivates 36 different grape varieties.

The terroir of the Geographe Wine Region is influenced by its maritime climate, with warm summer temperatures moderated by Indian Ocean breezes year-round. With an average annual temperature of 22.4°C, supplemented by water from the Collie River, the region is ideal for viticulture. Winters bring heavy rainfall, varying from 500-800mm a year. Geographe contributes ten percent to Western Australia’s wine industry, with vineyards reaching a maximum altitude of 400 meters, situated on limestone soil that holds water well along the coast, promoting drainage and mineral-rich content. Coastal vineyards feature low soil fertility, extending ripening times for smaller berries with intense aromas and concentrated flavours, while inland vineyards benefit from higher fertility derived from sandy loam and gneissic rock.
