Art Series Shiraz 2022

Leeuwin Estate Art Series Shiraz 2022

Leeuwin Estate Art Series is renowned as one of Margaret River’s most consistent Shiraz offerings.

The 2022 vintage presents an abundance of dark cherries, blueberries, mulberries, and currants that envelop the nose, complemented by heightened floral notes of violets and lavender. Beneath this enticing bouquet lies a subtle array of spice notes, including black cardamom, cinnamon, nutmeg, and star anise. Gentle layers of cedar, black pepper, and chalk add further complexity, enhancing the aromatic profile. This vintage also features a small amount of Malbec and Viognier, contributing to its unique character.

On the palate, the wine showcases an energetic brightness, with fresh acidity serving as the backbone that weaves through concentrated boysenberries, cherries, and currants. There is impressive dimension and capacity in the mid-palate, leading to structural, silky tannins that linger gracefully, culminating in a long, satisfying finish. This Shiraz is a testament to the quality and depth that Margaret River can achieve, making it a remarkable choice for any wine enthusiast.

WinePilot.com – 96 Points
Shiraz dominant, there is a dollop of both Viognier and Malbec (3% of each), in this stunning Margaret River Shiraz. 20% whole bunch and a total of eighteen months maturation in various formats of French oak. Deep magenta hue. Quite the savoury style, we have notes of licorice, animal skins, dry herbs, blackcurrants, cloves and a hint of graphite. Beautifully structured, this is seamless and seductive. There is a line of fine acidity, all leading to quite a complex style. Such exemplary balance here with excellent length. Enjoy over the next ten to fifteen years. A superb Margaret River Shiraz. The best in the region?

Ray Jordan – 95 Points
Pepper and spice and all things nice in wine that continues to evolve as it explores new possibilities. It’s medium bodied with a mix of red and blue fruits. Inspired by the wines of the Northern Rhone and the use of different oaks of different formats, which contribute to the subtlety and poise on the palate. An elegant wine with fune bony tannins and tremendous length. A touch of sage, spice and pepper with darker blueberry and plummy fruit. There is an incredible intensity and vibrancy here showing great length

Erin Larkin, Robert Parker Wine Advocate – 95 Points
The 2022 Art Series Shiraz is excellent. It is lush and persistent, with a sapid mid-palate and layers of spice and textural complexity. Very good. It remains bloody and mineral, characterized by savory tannins, pink peppercorns, nori, gravel and dried herbs, with pomegranate molasses, redcurrant and a hint of goji berry to boot. The tannins and the fruit are as one: the wine isn’t encased by tannin, as so many are, rather, it IS tannin, in that the tannin exudes from its very core, like rays of sunshine. Good! Margaret River Wine Region

Nestled in the southwestern corner of Australia, Margaret River is celebrated for its exceptional wines and stunning landscapes. This region has carved out a prominent place in the global wine industry, thanks to its unique terroir and commitment to quality. This exploration delves into the secrets behind Margaret River’s viticultural success, highlighting its standout wines, the influence of its climate, the award-winning wineries that define the area, and how these outstanding wines compare to others across Australia.

Signature Varietals

Margaret River is renowned for producing a diverse range of wines, each reflecting the region’s distinctive characteristics. Among the most celebrated are its robust Cabernet Sauvignons and elegant Chardonnays, alongside delightful blends of Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon. The combination of the region’s Mediterranean climate, fertile soils, and refreshing ocean breezes creates an ideal environment for cultivating grapes of exceptional quality. This unique synergy allows winemakers to craft wines that not only express the terroir but also delight the palate with complexity and depth.

Climate: A Key to Success

The remarkable stability of Margaret River’s climate is a key factor in its winemaking excellence, setting it apart from the more extreme weather conditions found on Australia’s east coast. While the east coast grapples with the unpredictable fluctuations of La Niña and El Niño, which can lead to erratic weather patterns, Margaret River enjoys a temperate and consistent climate. This stability is crucial for producing wines with a distinct regional character year after year. With mild, wet winters and warm, dry summers, grapes can ripen slowly, allowing for the development of complex flavours that define the region’s wines.

Oceanic Influences

The Indian and Southern Oceans play an essential role in moderating Margaret River’s climate, helping to regulate temperature extremes and providing a stable growing environment. This moderating influence ensures that grapes avoid the stress of rapid temperature changes, leading to more even ripening and higher quality fruit. As a result, the consistent climate contributes to the production of high-quality vintages that winemakers can reliably predict, enabling them to plan their practices effectively. In contrast to the east coast’s dramatic weather shifts, Margaret River’s stability offers a significant advantage, resulting in wines that showcase a distinctive and recognisable character.

Award-Winning Excellence

The award-winning reputation of Margaret River is extensive, highlighting the region’s commitment to excellence in winemaking. Notable wineries such as Fraser Gallop, Xanadu, Amelia Park, Domaine Naturaliste, Leeuwin Estate, Cullen, Pierro, and Moss Wood consistently garner accolades for their exceptional craftsmanship. These producers expertly blend innovation with traditional techniques, creating wines that regularly earn recognition on the international stage. Margaret River wines, particularly its Cabernet Sauvignons and Chardonnays, are often regarded as benchmarks for their varietals, setting high standards within the industry. The unique combination of climate, geography, and winemaking expertise gives these wines a distinctive edge, making them a top choice for both connoisseurs and casual wine lovers alike.

A Dominant Force in Wine

The success of Margaret River wines in international competitions further underscores the region’s winemaking excellence. Many award-winning wines across various categories originate from this part of Western Australia, reflecting the consistent quality and innovation within Margaret River’s winemaking community. The region’s ability to produce exceptional wines year after year cements its status as a dominant force in the Australian wine landscape.
