Opulent ~ Elegant ~ Critical Acclaim

A masterclass in restrained power and textured layering, the Reserve Chardonnay from Montague Estate’s 2023 vintage is a luxurious yet finely balanced white. It begins with richness and butterscotch allure, and unfurls gracefully into chalky acidity and savoury elegance, a White crafted to mature with poise.

Why You’ll Love It ❤️

  • 🍋 Luscious aromatics – lemon curd, quince, and subtle spices with faintly leesy struck‑match depth
  • 🥜 Generous palate – rich butterscotch and cashew balanced by chalky, limestone acidity
  • 🏆 Critically acclaimed – 97 points from Ray Jordan; cellar up to 10 years
  • 👨‍🍳 Serious complexity – deep texture, clarity of fruit, and savoury energy carry it far beyond the ordinary

Awards 🏆

97 Points – Ray Jordan
“Rich and highly textured Chardonnay. The colour is golden yellow. The nose is something else. Lemon curd, quince and subtle spices with a slight struck‑match leesy complexity. Then the palate delivers with a fine linear mouth‑feel that starts with a richer butterscotch and cashew character, then lets the limestone chalky acid and slight savouriness finish it. Excellent wine.”

Tasting Notes 🍇

  • Colour: Radiant golden yellow with a refined depth
  • Aromatics: Engaging notes of lemon curd, quince, gentle spice and leesy struck-match complexity
  • Palate: Silky, linear texture featuring butterscotch and cashew richness balanced by limestone-driven acidity and a savoury finish

Winemaker’s Note

“A Chardonnay brimming with richness yet underpinned by vibrant acidity and minerality—ripe for now, with the structure and elegance to reward cellaring.”

Viticulture & Winemaking

Selected from estate vines, the grapes were harvested and vinified with precision. While specific oak regimes for this Reserve aren’t detailed on the site, Montague’s standard Chardonnay release sees around 25% new French oak, with balance in seasoned barrels, fermented traditionally and aged to maturity. Expect similarly thoughtful oak integration here.

Sustainability & Natural Practices 🌱

Montague Estate operates with a focus on sustainable viticulture, minimal intervention, and respecting the vineyard’s natural expression. Their limited-production approach ensures meticulous quality and attention to detail.

Storage & Serving Tips ❄️

  • Serving Temperature: 10–12 °C – to showcase both richness and minerality

  • Decanting: Not necessary, but allow a few minutes to breathe for lifted aromatics

  • Cellaring Potential: Designed to evolve gracefully over 10 years, unveiling added complexity and texture over time .

Food Pairing Suggestions 🍽️

  • Roast chicken with truffle butter – a match for both depth and sophistication

  • Seared scallops in beurre blanc – aligns with the wine’s chalky acidity and butterscotch nuances

  • Creamy pasta with sage and walnuts – highlights the nutty and savoury elements

  • Mild aged cheeses – like Comté or Gruyère for a subtle counterpoint to the wine’s richness

FAQ Wine Terms 🧐

Q: Why is this Chardonnay cellaring-worthy?
Because it balances opulent fruit with sharp acidity and minerality—building complexity and poise with age.

Q: What is struck‑match complexity?
A subtle sulphidic note reminiscent of the match‑stick scent, often found in chardonnays with extended lees contact—adding depth and intrigue to the aroma.
