Myattsfield Vineyard Durif Magnum

The Myattsfield Vineyard Durif Magnum is a special limited-release wine, presented in a 1.5-litre Magnum size. This exceptional release is crafted for those who appreciate a bold, full-bodied red. Durif, known for its robust character, is embraced in this wine to create a powerful, dry red. The fruit is harvested from the Perth Hills and aged in American oak barrels for approximately 18 months. This approach mellows and matures the wine, enhancing its rich, complex profile while avoiding new oak to prevent overwhelming the grape’s natural tannins. The result is an inky, deeply coloured wine that showcases the intense qualities of Durif.

Colour, Aromas, and Smell:
In the glass, it presents a striking deep hue, indicative of its powerful nature. The nose is rich with aromas of blackberry and plum, complemented by additional notes of stewed forest berries, preserved plum, and chocolate-licorice. The wine’s aromatic profile is bold and complex, setting the stage for a substantial tasting experience.

Flavours, Tastes, and Palate:
On the palate, the Myattsfield Durif delivers an impressive intensity with flavours of blackberry and plum at the forefront. This full-bodied wine is characterized by its inky richness and concentrated texture. The palate is further enhanced by sweet spice, brandy-soaked dried fruits, and nuts, all wrapped in substantial tannins. This Magnum is a powerful and overt expression of Durif, presenting a balanced yet robust profile that can be enjoyed now or cellared for even greater complexity.

Food Matching:
It pairs exceptionally well with hearty and robust dishes. Its bold character complements juicy steaks, rich game meats, and braised dishes. The wine also pairs beautifully with complex cheeses and dark chocolate desserts, making it a versatile choice for enhancing a range of culinary experiences. Given its robust nature and cellaring potential, it is ideal for special occasions and long-term aging.

Review

Never heard of a Durif ? Give it a go. It’s a bold , full bodied drop. This is one of my favourites. Myattsfield was the first winery in Australia to plant a Durif, and I am sure glad they did!

Learn more about Myattsfield Vineyard

Myattsfield Vineyard is a beautiful boutique winery nested in the Perth Hills region.

The original Myattsfield was the family farm in Camberwell, London. Joseph Myatt established a market garden on land owned by the Minet family. Over 175 years on, as descendants of Joseph, we’re now here in the Bickley Valley, Western Australia. The Bickley Valley is merely a small sub-region of the Perth Hills Wine Region, spanning from Chittering to Jarrahdale. This area was acknowledged for its distinct set of geographical and topographical influences impacting the wine quality in the region by the Geographic Indications Committee. It was granted GIC status as a gazetted wine region in 1999.

Who owns Myattsfield Winery? Owners Josh and Rachael are devoted to producing premium red and white wines with a personal, hands on approach. Their wines continue to gain accolades through the industry, with the likes of Ray Jordan ranking Myattsfield a top winery of the Perth Hills. We are pleased to offer you their extensive array of award-winning wines. Expect your palate to be taken on a journey of flavours, with some lesser known, but amazing varietals rarely found like Durif.

The Darling Scarp protects the Valley from maritime influences, making the climate more continental than Mediterranean in nature. This corresponds to cold nights and warm days. Valley walls reduce direct daylight hours, resulting in the daily maxima arriving later in the day and for a shorter period. At 300-350m above sea level, the Bickley Valley is 2-3 degrees cooler than Perth. Amongst the undulating terrain and aspects, site plays an important role in the valley. Elevated, northern-facing slopes produce significantly warmer sites better suited to dry red varieties. Southern-facing, lower sites produce cooler variations capable of producing better whites and lighter reds, while elevated, western-facing sites are ideal for fortified production.
