Critical Acclaim

Wine Companion – 92 Points

A blend of Perth Hills and Swan Valley fruit, matured in new and old French and American oak. While this presents more traditionally, it’s interesting to see the currency of lower alcohol and fresher styles from this producer, shiraz included. Pretty wine, lithe and medium weight, tightens on ribs of lacy, powdery tannin while delivering a ripe and somewhat spicy expression. The perfume is forest berries dusted with coconut, cinnamon, spiked with fig and date. The palate follows on with more or less the same, but with a touch of clove and some more splintery, woody elements. A juiciness here, a freshness too. Bright and inviting shiraz is the deal.

Ray Jordan – 93 Points

This is quite a firm style which seems to mirror the warm vintage. Traditional techniques at work here with fermentation in open fermenters and pressing to a mix of older French and American oak. Dark chocolate and licorice with a dusting cocoa powder. The sweet fruits emerge as it breathes and are offset by a light sprinkle of cracked black pepper. Fine chalky tannins and subtly balanced oak complete a finely crafted palate.

Tasting Notes

🔹Appearance: The 2022 Shiraz has a deep, enticing colour, hinting at its intensity and rich fruit profile.

🔹Aroma: The nose offers an array of aromas, from dark cherry and raspberry to intriguing hints of clove, chocolate-coconut, and hazelnut. These aromas create a layered and inviting bouquet, making the wine immediately appealing.

🔹Palate: The palate is a harmonious blend of sweet, ripe fruit—think raisin and raspberry—complemented by notes of chocolate-coconut, cola, and subtle bourbon-like nuances. The cooler season has contributed a refined and linear character, with a steely edge through the mid-palate. The wine’s toasty richness from the American oak seamlessly integrates with the fruit, resulting in a full-bodied yet elegant Shiraz that’s structured and complex.

Food Pairing Suggestions 🍷

  • Roasted Meats: Perfect for pairing with roasted lamb or beef, where the wine’s depth and subtle spice enhance the rich, savoury flavours.
  • Beef Stew: A hearty beef stew complements the wine’s full-bodied nature and adds to the rich, layered profile.
  • BBQ Ribs: The sweet fruit and spice notes in the Shiraz make it a great match for smoky BBQ ribs.
  • Aged Cheeses: Enjoy with aged cheeses like cheddar or Gruyère, where the wine’s oak influences beautifully complement the savoury, nutty characteristics of the cheese.

Best Serving Temperature:
Serve at 16-18°C to allow the wine’s flavours and aromas to fully open up. This temperature also helps highlight the balance between its richness and structure.

Vineyard & Winemaking

  • Vineyard: The grapes are sourced from Myattsfield Vineyard in the cooler climate of the Perth Hills. The region’s elevation and proximity to the coast allow the fruit to develop complex flavours while maintaining a fresh, balanced acidity.
  • Winemaking: The Shiraz is fermented in small open vessels and then matured in a combination of new and used American oak barrels. This maturation process adds depth, richness, and subtle oak influences while maintaining the wine’s fresh fruit profile.
