About Picardy Wines

Picardy is a renowned boutique winery in Pemberton, Western Australia, established in 1993 by Bill, Sandra and Dan Pannell. The Pannell family already had a major place in WA wine history through Moss Wood in Margaret River, and Picardy continued that family pursuit of fine wine with a strong focus on cool-climate precision and longevity.

Today, Picardy is especially admired for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, though the estate also produces Sauvignon Blanc Semillon, Shiraz, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. The wines are made exclusively from the family’s single vineyard in Pemberton, reinforcing the estate’s reputation for quality, site expression and consistency.

The Pemberton Region

Pemberton is one of Western Australia’s most important cool-climate wine regions, well suited to refined, age-worthy styles. Its combination of southern latitude, altitude, ocean influence and long ripening conditions helps produce wines with freshness, structure and aromatic detail.

The region’s loamy gravel soils and cool conditions are particularly well suited to Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, making Pemberton one of Australia’s standout regions for these varieties.

The Picardy Vineyard and Approach

The Picardy vineyard sits on a gentle north-facing slope around 200 metres above sea level, approximately 35 kilometres from the Southern Ocean. The site was selected for its excellent drainage, gravelly loam soils and ability to produce high-quality cool-climate fruit.

Viticulture at Picardy is detail-driven and quality-focused. The vines are closely planted to encourage competition and deeper root growth, while sustainable practices such as cover cropping, composting and minimal soil disturbance help maintain long-term vineyard health. Hand harvesting and careful fruit selection further support the purity and finesse of the wines.

Pinot Noir and Chardonnay Clones

Picardy’s Burgundian inspiration extends to its clonal selections. Through work begun in the 1980s, the Pannell family helped identify and import high-quality Pinot Noir and Chardonnay clones chosen for wine quality rather than yield.

This careful clonal focus remains a major part of why Picardy has become so highly regarded for finely structured Pemberton Pinot Noir and elegant, age-worthy Chardonnay.

Oak and Winemaking Philosophy

At Picardy, oak is used to support the fruit rather than dominate it. The family has worked with respected French coopers, particularly Tonnellerie Meyrieux Fils, to ensure the oak program adds subtle structure, texture and complexity while preserving varietal expression and regional character.
