Elegant | Creamy Texture

The Singlefile Family Reserve Chardonnay of 2024 is a striking Great Southern Chardonnay that shows exactly why this wine is so widely regarded as one of Western Australia’s finest expressions of the varietal. Powerful yet beautifully composed, it brings together intensity, purity and precision in a way that feels both luxurious and refined. For those who enjoy Chardonnay with a creamy, buttery feel, this is a particularly compelling release, though its freshness and structure ensure it remains balanced and poised throughout.

Aromas of grapefruit, ripe nectarine and citrus blossom rise from the glass, layered with roasted cashew and a gentle struck match complexity that adds sophistication and depth. On the palate, concentrated citrus and stone fruit flavours are carried by a smooth, creamy texture, with partial malolactic fermentation contributing richness without overwhelming the wine’s lively core. Oak is handled with finesse, adding shape, length and subtle nuttiness to the finish. Already impressive in its youth, this is a Chardonnay with the structure and detail to reward careful cellaring over the next five years.

Why You Will Love It 💛

  • Beautifully Layered Aromatics: Grapefruit, ripe nectarine and citrus blossom are lifted by roasted cashew and subtle struck match complexity.
  • Creamy Yet Balanced: Partial malolactic fermentation gives the wine a smooth, buttery texture while still allowing freshness and drive to shine through.
  • Exceptional Fruit & Oak Integration: Rich fruit concentration and refined oak work together seamlessly, giving the wine depth, polish and length.
  • Critically Acclaimed: Awarded 95 points by Wine Companion, highlighting its class, energy and long, focused finish.
  • Cellaring Potential: Impressive now, but structured to improve further over the next five years.

2024 Vintage

Ray Jordan 95 Points

This one comes off the family’s Denmark property, and although the season was warm, the slightly more subdued climes have resulted in wines—especially chardonnay—that are quite exceptional. Opens with an inviting combination of lemon pith, cut lime, and a savoriness, while on the palate, other nuances of butterscotch, brioche, and a slightly cashew influence are cut with a little citrus minerality. It retains a cooler-climate fineness and precision, and this is an excellent example of southern region chardonnay.

Vineyard & Winemaking:

  • Oak Maturation: Aged for nine months in new (33%) and one-year-old French barriques, allowing subtle oak influence and a smooth, integrated texture.
  • Fermentation: The wine underwent partial malolactic fermentation (25%), adding a creamy mouthfeel and contributing to its richness.

Vintage Conditions:

The 2024 vintage in Western Australia’s Great Southern wine region was marked by an exceptionally early harvest, driven by warmer-than-usual temperatures in late spring and a hot, dry summer. These conditions accelerated budburst and flowering, leading to most grape varieties being harvested by the end of March—about four to Six weeks earlier than average.

While the vintage presented challenges, with consistent heat spikes in late January and early February, careful vineyard management helped mitigate potential damage. Chardonnay Yields  were down 20–30%, however, the warm and dry conditions contributed to excellent fruit quality, particularly for Chardonnay, which benefited from the minimal disease and bird pressure.

Best Serving Temperature:

  • Ideal Serving Temperature: 10-12°C
Serving this Chardonnay slightly chilled allows the fresh citrus and stone fruit flavours to shine while preserving its creamy texture and complexity.

FAQ Wine Terms 🤔

  • Malolactic Fermentation: A process where bacteria convert malic acid (found in grapes) into lactic acid, softening the wine and adding a creamy texture. It’s commonly used in Chardonnay to add richness.
  • Barriques: Small French oak barrels (225L) used for aging wine. The oak imparts flavours of vanilla, spice, and toast, while also providing structure.
  • Struck Match: A faint aroma of sulfur compounds that can develop during fermentation, adding complexity and a subtle, smoky quality to the wine.
  • Titratable Acidity: A measure of the wine’s acidity, contributing to its crispness and freshness. This wine has a balanced level of acidity that enhances its structure and longevity.
  • pH: A measure of the wine’s acidity and balance. A lower pH generally indicates more acidity, contributing to the wine’s freshness and crispness.
