Museum Release Chardonnay 2017

Amelia Park Wines Reserve Chardonnay

This is a very rare and very small release of Amelia Park Wines 2017 museum stock.

The 2017 Reserve Chardonnay is crafted from a single vineyard located in the Treeton sub-region of Margaret River, utilising the esteemed 100% Gin Gin clone. This particular vintage presented challenges due to unpredictable weather conditions during the ripening period. However, the team’s dedication and meticulous attention to detail in the vineyard ensured that pristine fruit was ultimately delivered to the winery.

The harvest took place in February 2016, with the grapes handpicked early in the morning to preserve their freshness. After harvesting, the fruit was placed in a cool room to chill overnight, ensuring optimal quality. The following morning, whole bunches were gently tipped into the press, with the free-run juice collected and transferred to a stainless steel holding tank to settle naturally overnight. The slightly cloudy juice was then racked into a blend of new, second, and third-use French oak barrels for fermentation, which occurred spontaneously through wild fermentation. Once primary fermentation was complete, the wine was sulfured to maintain freshness and prevent secondary fermentation.

This exceptional Chardonnay is the result of meticulous winemaking practices. Aged for nine months in French oak, the wine benefits from occasional stirring of the lees, which adds complexity and texture. The best parcels of Chardonnay are reserved for this release, ensuring that only the finest fruit is showcased.

A delicate bouquet of white nectarine, lime, and chalky minerality. On the palate, the wine is elegant, fine, and beautifully balanced, with a sophistication that reflects its careful craftsmanship. This exquisite Chardonnay is ready to be enjoyed now but also possesses the potential for further cellaring, allowing its character to evolve further over time.

Margaret River Chardonnay

Margaret River is celebrated for its premium Chardonnay, and a significant part of its allure comes from the region’s unique climate. The Mediterranean climate features warm, sun-soaked days paired with cool, breezy nights, creating ideal conditions for grape growing. This diurnal temperature variation helps grapes develop intense flavours while maintaining their natural acidity, which is crucial for crafting balanced and refreshing Chardonnays.

The proximity to the Indian Ocean plays a vital role, as the maritime influence moderates temperature extremes, reducing the risk of heat stress on the vines. This consistent climate allows for slow and even ripening, which is essential for developing the nuanced profiles that Margaret River Chardonnays are known for. The region experiences minimal rainfall during the critical ripening period, further ensuring that the grapes achieve optimal maturity.

Margaret River’s diverse soil types, including sandy loam and clay, also contribute to the wines’ complexity. These varied soils allow winemakers to experiment with different vineyard sites and techniques, leading to a rich tapestry of flavours in the final product. Many winemakers utilise both traditional practices and innovative techniques, such as cool fermentation and selective oak aging, to enhance the wine’s character.

Moreover, the strong commitment to sustainable viticulture practices in the region reflects a deep respect for the environment, ensuring that the vineyards remain healthy and productive for generations to come. This dedication to quality, coupled with the region’s natural advantages, positions Margaret River as a premier destination for Chardonnay lovers worldwide. The result is a collection of exceptional wines that capture the essence of this unique terroir, making Margaret River a benchmark for excellence in Australian Chardonnay.
