Citrus and stone fruit | Flinty minerality

The Below & Above Chardonnay of 2022 is Pemberton Chardonnay with real definition. It’s built around bright grapefruit and Meyer lemon, layered with cut pear and white peach, then pulled tight by a mineral, flinty edge that keeps everything focused and fresh. The blend of Gingin (63%) and Burgundy Clone 76 (37%) gives you the best of both worlds: energy and line from Gingin, plus a silkier, more refined texture from Clone 76.

Whole bunch pressing and ten months in French oak barriques (one third new) add quiet complexity without taking over. You’ll notice subtle hazelnut and brioche notes in the background, but the fruit stays the headline. It’s a Chardonnay that feels polished and composed now, and will gain extra savoury depth with a few years in the cellar.

Why You Will Love It

  • Pemberton Chardonnay with citrus drive and cool-climate freshness
  • Gingin plus Clone 76 for both vibrancy and silky mid-palate texture
  • Flint, sea-spray and mineral detail that keeps it clean and precise
  • French oak seasoning for gentle hazelnut and brioche complexity, not heaviness
  • Drinks beautifully now, with real upside to cellar over the next five years

Accolades

Ray Jordan – 94 Points
This Pemberton vineyard is really starting to kick some goals, and this is a wonderful example of chardonnay now coming from the property. On the nose, there’s crunchy grapefruit and cut pear, with a little squeeze of lemon. The palate has a slight creamy feel to it, but it’s still quite fine and controlled, with a deep and lingering finish. There’s a crunchy vibrancy here that captures the region perfectly.
