Porongurup Single Vineyard Shiraz 2022

Duke’s Vineyard Shiraz

Bold & Complex | Velvety Tannins

The Duke’s Vineyard Single Vineyard Shiraz of 2022 is a prime example of a refined Shiraz that thrives from the cool-climate terroir of the Great Southern’s Porongurup region. This wine captures the distinctiveness of the vineyard, showcasing dark fruit flavours, complex spice notes, and a well-integrated oak profile. The result is a beautifully structured Shiraz that is as approachable now as it is capable of aging gracefully over the next decade.

Why You Will Love It ❤️

  • Complex Flavours: Dark forest berries, fine oak integration, and earthy notes combine to offer a wine of depth and balance.

Tasting Notes:

The Dukes Vineyard Single Vineyard Shiraz 2022 pours a medium-deep magenta with purple edges, drawing you in with its intense and complex bouquet. On the nose, dark boysenberry, blackberry, and black cherry mingle with black truffle, lavender, and hints of baking spices, cracked black pepper, and cured charcuterie.

On the palate, the wine delivers a rich mix of dark forest berries, particularly blackberry and mulberry, with a fine, powdery tannin structure. The mouthfeel is juicy and generous, with fresh lavender and hints of cedar, cinnamon, Sichuan pepper, and bramble contributing to its complexity. The finish is long, refined, and focused, with subtle notes of olive brine adding a savoury touch.

Food Pairing Suggestions:

  • Roast Lamb: The deep flavours of the wine pair wonderfully with the rich, savoury profile of roast lamb, especially with a rosemary and garlic crust.
  • Grilled Steak: A perfectly cooked steak, especially with a balsamic reduction or pepper sauce, is a great match for this wine’s bold structure.
  • Slow-Cooked Beef Stew: The wine’s richness complements the deep, slow-cooked flavours of a hearty beef stew.
  • Mature Cheeses: This Shiraz works excellently with aged cheeses like cheddar or blue cheese, offering a lovely contrast in flavour.

Best Serving Temp:

Serve the Duke’s Vineyard Single Vineyard Shiraz at 16°C to 18°C to fully enjoy its dark fruit flavours and complex spice character.

Technical Terms Explained:

  • Velvety Tannins: The smooth, plush feel on the palate, often achieved through fine tannin structure, which enhances the wine’s mouthfeel and overall balance.
  • Oak Integration: The process by which the wine absorbs flavours from the oak barrels during ageing, contributing notes of vanilla, spice, and sometimes a smoky character.
  • Ageing Potential: This refers to the wine’s ability to develop more complex flavours and aromas over time. Wines with a solid tannin structure and good acidity, like this Shiraz, tend to improve with age.
  • Tannins: Natural compounds in grape skins, seeds, and stems that contribute to a wine’s structure and mouthfeel. In this Shiraz, the tannins are fine and powdery, providing a smooth but firm texture.
