About Mount Trio Vineyard
Mount Trio Vineyard was established in 1989 by winemaker Gavin Berry and his wife Gill Graham in the Porongurups, one of the most distinctive inland subregions of the Great Southern. Set beside the Porongurup National Park, the vineyard has a striking setting as well as the kind of elevation, aspect and soil profile that suit cool-climate viticulture very well.
That setting is central to the winery’s identity. With gravelly loam soils, good drainage, cooling breezes and a naturally balanced site, Mount Trio produces wines that feel fresh, expressive and shaped by place rather than heavy-handed winemaking.
Porongurup and the Mount Trio style
The Porongurups are especially well regarded for Riesling and Pinot Noir, and Mount Trio has leaned into that natural strength. The home vineyard is now planted entirely to Pinot Noir, Riesling and Chardonnay, the varieties that have proven best suited to the site, while other fruit for the broader range is sourced from Mount Barker and Frankland River.
That gives the range both clarity and flexibility. There is a strong regional thread running through the wines, but also enough breadth to offer different styles across whites, rosé and reds. The overall feel is polished but unforced, with fruit purity, balance and easy drinkability at the centre.
A winery shaped by experience and restraint
Part of what makes Mount Trio distinctive is Gavin Berry’s long experience in Great Southern winemaking. Over decades in the region, he has helped build a strong understanding of site, season and variety, and that knowledge comes through in wines that feel confident and well judged.
The vineyard is also run with a low-intervention approach, supported by naturally low-vigour soils and balanced vines. That quieter style of viticulture suits the personality of the wines. They tend to feel clean, expressive and regional, rather than overworked or overstated.
