Forest Hill Block 8 Chardonnay 2024

new halliday 95 point score

Crafted from the Gingin clone and aged in around 25% new oak, this wine is a powerful and captivating reflection of its cool-climate terroir, where both intensity and elegance are beautifully balanced. Forest Hill’s Block 8 Chardonnay is a single-vineyard expression from Mount Barker in Western Australia’s Great Southern region, an area celebrated for producing some of Australia’s most refined cool-climate Chardonnays. Forest Hill is the oldest cool-climate vineyard in Western Australia, planted in the late 1960s, and Block 8 is one of its most prized sites. This block sits on ancient gravelly loam soils over clay, which naturally restrict vine vigour and yield, resulting in small berries with concentrated flavour. The cool maritime-influenced climate, marked by mild summers and a long, even ripening season, gives fruit with pristine acidity and a clear mineral thread.

Why You Will Love It

  • Complex & Captivating: This Chardonnay combines bold flavours with remarkable finesse. Expect vibrant stone fruit, floral nuances, and nutty complexity, making it a wine that keeps evolving with every sip.
  • Perfect Balance of Richness & Elegance: Despite its full-bodied profile, this wine maintains grace and poise, with vibrant acidity and a touch of savoury character that ensures a clean, lingering finish.
  • Award-Winning Quality: Described by Erin Larkin from Wine Companion as “the greatest Chardonnay in the Great Southern region,” this wine is a true standout in its class.
  • Subtle Oak Influence: With 25% new oak, the wine picks up subtle, elegant layers of roasted cashew and a hint of amontillado sherry, enhancing its complexity without overpowering the fruit.
  • Perfect for Cellaring: The wine’s structure and balance make it an excellent candidate for aging, with the potential to develop even more intricate flavours over the next decade.

Awards

  • Ray Jordan – 96 Pts
An incredibly powerful and layered chardonnay showing some distinctive winemaking artefacts that have been well managed with the quality fruit. On the nose, a struck match aroma lifts. A light lees influence and some malolactic fermentation have enhanced the palate feel. Lemon, savoury brioche characters and a little honeycomb on the palate with a dry minerality defining the finish”
  • Wine Companion – 95 pts
Mike Bennie on the 2023 Block 8 Chardonnay:This is quite a toasty, oak-laden chardonnay, but finds good power from fruit character. There’s refreshing mineral veins, frisky, limey acidity and a good dose of chardonnay 101 in stone fruits, green apple and richness of green figs. A lot on! Complex, layered and yet succulent, too. Distinct and distinguished chardonnay”
