Art Series Chardonnay 2021

Leeuwin Estate Art Series Chardonnay

The Leeuwin Estate Art Series 2021 Chardonnay is a standout, consistently ranking among the top five Chardonnays in Margaret River year after year. This exceptional vintage is nothing short of spectacular and may very well be the finest Leeuwin Chardonnay to date.

From the moment you encounter it, the nose is a captivating blend of chamomile, lemon myrtle, cherry blossom, and ginger, creating an elevated and fragrant profile. Beneath this aromatic veil lies a core of concentrated fruit notes, featuring pear, lemon flesh, and white nectarine, all underscored by subtle threads of graphite, flint, and chalk, mingled with nutmeg and almond meal.

On the palate, the Art Series Chardonnay is a revelation of energy and poise. Fresh lime and nashi pear are beautifully integrated, contributing to its ethereal, mineral character and defined natural acidity. An intriguing element of saline, wet stone, and phyllitic nuances weave seamlessly throughout, enhancing its complexity. The palate showcases an effortlessly long and focused presence, with the oak brilliantly managed to complement rather than overshadow.

This vintage offers a subtle yet compelling flintiness and a lift of spice, with the whole bunch technique adding a distinctive stalky phenolic character. The fruit is generous, especially through the mid-palate, while a savoury almond meal note emerges on the finish, highlighting its incredible length and power. The pronounced minerality on the finish solidifies its place among the top tiers of Leeuwin Chardonnays, affirming its reputation as a wine of elegance and outstanding depth.

Reviews:

98 Points Huon Hooke, The Real Review
“Light straw colour with a reserved lemon/grapefruit aroma, fresh and penetrating, the palate brisk and bright with vibrant acidity and intense grapefruit/lemon flavours that persist the full length of the very long palate. Superb vitality and balance. It promises to reward cellaring too. Tremendously concentrated and compact, with extreme drive and massive persistence, it positively vibrates with energy. Very cellarworthy, too.”

98 Points Ray Jordan, Ray Jordan Wine

“Remarkably complex aromas of dominant stone fruit like nectarine with less of the pear and cut lime character you expect. An intense and powerful wine with a distinctive chalky limestone influence on the palate. Lacks the super intensity of the 2020 yet it has great length and focus. Continues the subtle move to Burgundian styles. This is one of the most delicate of Arft Series chardies. Elements of the 2017 yet there is more power and intensity within its tight frame. Has slightly more phenolic character. The minerally cracked seashell character is clearly evident here. It is a pure with an almost shimmering acidity and precision through to the long finish. One of the more individual of the Leeuwin chardonnays to date.”

98 points Cassandra Charlick, Decanter

“2021 was marginally cooler for whites, and while this is young, its power is irrepressible yet it also shows restraint and harmony. A fine gauze of delicate florals and spice tucked behind structure, power and tension. Tuberose, green peppercorn, pear skin, preserved lemon, green cardamon and peach blossom. The palate offers jewelled hues of peach pit; a little flint, lots of wet stone minerality and crushed white sage dance with a very fine thread of salinity and lacy acidity. This takes time to unravel and unfurl, but once it does, it’s got everything. The structure is superb and the 100% new oak meticulosity managed. Is this the greatest Art Series yet?”

Margaret River Wine Region

Nestled in the southwestern corner of Australia, Margaret River is celebrated for its exceptional wines and stunning landscapes. This region has carved out a prominent place in the global wine industry, thanks to its unique terroir and commitment to quality. This exploration delves into the secrets behind Margaret River’s viticultural success, highlighting its standout wines, the influence of its climate, the award-winning wineries that define the area, and how these outstanding wines compare to others across Australia.

Signature Varietals

Margaret River is renowned for producing a diverse range of wines, each reflecting the region’s distinctive characteristics. Among the most celebrated are its robust Cabernet Sauvignons and elegant Chardonnays, alongside delightful blends of Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon. The combination of the region’s Mediterranean climate, fertile soils, and refreshing ocean breezes creates an ideal environment for cultivating grapes of exceptional quality. This unique synergy allows winemakers to craft wines that not only express the terroir but also delight the palate with complexity and depth.

Climate: A Key to Success

The remarkable stability of Margaret River’s climate is a key factor in its winemaking excellence, setting it apart from the more extreme weather conditions found on Australia’s east coast. While the east coast grapples with the unpredictable fluctuations of La Niña and El Niño, which can lead to erratic weather patterns, Margaret River enjoys a temperate and consistent climate. This stability is crucial for producing wines with a distinct regional character year after year. With mild, wet winters and warm, dry summers, grapes can ripen slowly, allowing for the development of complex flavours that define the region’s wines.

Oceanic Influences

The Indian and Southern Oceans play an essential role in moderating Margaret River’s climate, helping to regulate temperature extremes and providing a stable growing environment. This moderating influence ensures that grapes avoid the stress of rapid temperature changes, leading to more even ripening and higher quality fruit. As a result, the consistent climate contributes to the production of high-quality vintages that winemakers can reliably predict, enabling them to plan their practices effectively. In contrast to the east coast’s dramatic weather shifts, Margaret River’s stability offers a significant advantage, resulting in wines that showcase a distinctive and recognisable character.

Award-Winning Excellence

The award-winning reputation of Margaret River is extensive, highlighting the region’s commitment to excellence in winemaking. Notable wineries such as Fraser Gallop, Xanadu, Amelia Park, Domaine Naturaliste, Leeuwin Estate, Cullen, Pierro, and Moss Wood consistently garner accolades for their exceptional craftsmanship. These producers expertly blend innovation with traditional techniques, creating wines that regularly earn recognition on the international stage. Margaret River wines, particularly its Cabernet Sauvignons and Chardonnays, are often regarded as benchmarks for their varietals, setting high standards within the industry. The unique combination of climate, geography, and winemaking expertise gives these wines a distinctive edge, making them a top choice for both connoisseurs and casual wine lovers alike.

A Dominant Force in Wine

The success of Margaret River wines in international competitions further underscores the region’s winemaking excellence. Many award-winning wines across various categories originate from this part of Western Australia, reflecting the consistent quality and innovation within Margaret River’s winemaking community. The region’s ability to produce exceptional wines year after year cements its status as a dominant force in the Australian wine landscape.
