Vintage Report:

The 2024 vintage in Margaret River will be remembered as one of the most thrilling in recent memory, especially for Chardonnay. Warm, dry conditions during spring and summer pushed the growing season ahead of schedule, accelerating ripening while keeping disease pressure remarkably low. Budburst came early, flowering passed smoothly, and veraison set in with clarity and consistency. The harvest window for whites was compressed, with what might normally take four weeks achieved in just two, as the optimal ripeness point came and went swiftly. Yields were generally down compared to recent averages, adding concentration and intensity to the fruit. Across premium sites, grapes achieved excellent physiological ripeness while retaining taut, refreshing acidity, a hallmark of the region’s maritime influence. In the vineyard, careful canopy management and precise irrigation were critical to balance vigour and stress. In the winery, winemakers needed to move fast to press and ferment fruit at the perfect moment. The resulting Chardonnay parcels show purity of citrus, stone fruit, and subtle florals, backed by a firm mineral backbone and an elegant structural spine. This is a vintage that offers both immediate charm and the potential to evolve beautifully over a decade or more, rich yet nimble, powerful yet poised.
