Reviews:

Light, bright yellow colour with a good collar of froth. The aroma is fresh and grapy, appealing and youthfully simple. The wine is quite intense and bright on the tongue, with some zip from acidity – but it’s far from tart. There is a little sweetness which softens it, keeps the balance and broadens its appeal. A pleasant young, quaffing fizz.

Huon Hooke – The Real Review

It’s been very well made, with more citrus and almond flavours than usual, the low alcohol another plus.

James Halliday – The Wine Companion

This is a pale lemon hue. While it is made in a style that might be simple, it provides simply delicious drinking. Quite pristine, this is fresh, clean and refreshing. We have notes of oystershells, saline touches, sea breezes and citrus, notably lemon. Fresh green apples. An attractive texture with a seductive nature, which persists well. Quite delicious. Enjoy this now and over the next 12 months. Ideal summer drinking.

Ken Gargett – Winepilot

Elegantly aromatic and inviting, the bouquet shows ripe apricot, red apple and lemon zest aromas, leading to an elegantly flavoursome palate offering smooth mouthfeel, finishing refreshing and lingering.

About MadFish Winery

MadFish Winery, located in the picturesque Margaret River region of Western Australia, has carved a niche for itself as a producer of high-quality, expressive wines that reflect the unique terroir of the area. Established in 1994, MadFish is part of the larger family of wineries under the banner of the renowned Howard Park Wine Group. The winery was born from a passion for crafting exceptional wines that capture the essence of their surroundings while offering a modern twist on traditional winemaking practices.

The founders, Jeff and Amy Burch, were inspired by the breathtaking landscapes and the potential of the Margaret River region. They recognised that the region’s climate, soil, and maritime influences were ideal for producing premium wines. With a commitment to sustainable practices and minimal intervention in the vineyard, MadFish Winery quickly gained recognition for its dedication to quality. The winery is known for sourcing fruit from its own vineyards as well as from select growers who share their vision.

MadFish Winery’s name is derived from the playful image of a fish, a nod to the region’s coastal heritage. The brand embodies a sense of fun and approachability while maintaining a serious commitment to excellence in winemaking. The label’s distinctive artwork features a vibrant fish, symbolising the winery’s focus on producing lively and expressive wines.

One of the standout features of MadFish Winery is its diverse portfolio and value for money. While the winery is particularly well-known for its Sauvignon Blanc Semillon, Chardonnay & Pinot Gris, it also produces a range of other varietals, including the lively MadFish Prosecco. Each wine reflects the unique characteristics of the grape, the terroir, and the winemaking philosophy.

Over the years, MadFish has embraced innovation while honouring traditional methods. The winery continually experiments with different grape varieties like Grenache and winemaking techniques, resulting in wines that are both distinctive and accessible. Their commitment to quality has earned them numerous awards and accolades, further solidifying their reputation in the competitive Australian wine industry.

The focus at MadFish Winery extends beyond producing exceptional wines; they are dedicated to fostering a strong connection with the community. The winery often hosts events, tastings, and educational experiences, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in the world of winemaking. This community spirit has endeared MadFish to both locals and visitors alike, making it a beloved destination in the Margaret River region.

As the winery continues to grow and evolve, it remains rooted in its original vision: to produce wines that are true to their origins, expressive of the land, and enjoyable for everyone. With a commitment to sustainability and a focus on quality at an affordable price point for all.

Origins of Prosecco

Prosecco, a sparkling wine celebrated worldwide, originates from the small village of Prosecco, now a suburb of Trieste, Italy. This charming region has a rich history of winemaking, with Prosecco being produced in various forms since ancient Roman times. The wine is made primarily from the Glera grape, a variety that has become inextricably linked to the bubbly style. Interestingly, the grape was originally called ‘Prosecco,’ but the name was changed to preserve the appellation for wines produced within the Italian region.

Prosecco is available in three levels of fizziness: sparkling or spumante, fizzy or frizzante, and still or tranquillo. This versatility makes it a popular choice for many occasions, from casual gatherings to elegant celebrations.

The Glera grape is particularly well-suited for sparkling wine production due to its bright acidity and toned-down flavour profile. With soft notes of apple, pear, peach, melon, and elderflower, Glera offers a pure and simple base upon which a delightful fizz can be built. The effervescence enhances delicate varietal aromas without overpowering the wine’s uncomplicated elegance. Importantly, Glera maintains its acidity well throughout the ripening process, resulting in a fizz that boasts mouth-watering freshness and a crisp finish.

Originally, Prosecco was made using the ancestral method, where wine was bottled partway through fermentation to trap carbon dioxide, creating gentle carbonation. However, around the turn of the 20th century, the Charmat method—also known as the ‘Italian Method’—was invented. This innovative technique allows for bubbles to be trapped in the wine via carbonation in large steel tanks, enabling the production of superior wines in larger quantities and with greater consistency.

Since its introduction, Prosecco has gained immense popularity, spreading far and wide across the globe. Its easy enjoyability and reasonable price tag have won the hearts of many wine lovers, making it a staple in celebrations and gatherings. With its rich history and charming origins, Prosecco continues to delight palates and play a significant role in the world of sparkling wines.
