At Myattsfield Vineyard, we specialise in Spanish and Portuguese varieties, which thrive in the warm, elevated, and continental climate of the Perth Hills. The grapes are handled with precision to preserve their inherent qualities, resulting in a wine that is both expressive and balanced.

Tasting Notes 🍷

Appearance
The wine has a deep, rich colour, signalling its intensity and full-bodied nature.

Aroma
On the nose, expect aromas of dark cherry, blackcurrant, and the sweet spice from American oak. Subtle mocha notes add complexity and depth to the bouquet.

Palate
This Tempranillo offers juicy dark fruit flavoursβ€”dark cherry and blackcurrantβ€”balanced with mocha and bright red fruit notes. Its smooth tannins provide a velvety mouthfeel, while a savoury spiciness on the finish adds complexity and keeps the wine engaging. The refreshing lift of raspberry ensures the wine remains lively and approachable.

Best Serving Temperature:

Serve this Tempranillo slightly below room temperature, around 16-18Β°C. This temperature range enhances its vibrant fruit flavours and soft tannins, ensuring a smooth and balanced experience.

Food Pairing Suggestions:

Grilled Vegetables: The wine’s savoury spice and juicy fruit make it an excellent match for Mediterranean-style grilled vegetables.
Roast Lamb: Pair this Tempranillo with roast lamb or BBQ ribs for a harmonious combination of rich flavours and spice.
Pasta with Tomato Sauce: Enjoy with a hearty pasta dish, especially one with a rich tomato-based sauce or spicy sausage.

Vineyard & Winemaking:

Vineyard
Sourced from Myattsfield Vineyard in the Perth Hills, this Tempranillo thrives in the warm, continental climate and unique terroir of the region. The vineyard’s elevation, combined with cooling winds, ensures the preservation of fresh acidity and vibrant fruit character.

Winemaking
The grapes are carefully hand-harvested and fermented to preserve their natural qualities. After fermentation, the wine is aged in American oak barrels to add complexity and smoothness while integrating the fruit and spice.

Β FAQ Wine Terms ❓

Tempranillo: A red grape variety native to Spain, known for its ripe dark fruit flavours and balanced acidity. It’s often used to make wines with bright fruit and earthy, spicy characteristics.
American Oak: Oak barrels from the United States, known for imparting sweet, vanilla-like spice and caramel flavours to the wine. This oak type adds richness and complexity.
Tannins: Tannins come from the grape skins, seeds, and stems and contribute structure and texture to the wine. In this Tempranillo, the tannins are soft and well-integrated, providing a smooth, velvety mouthfeel.
Mocha: A flavour and aroma profile reminiscent of chocolate and coffee, often created by oak aging, which adds complexity and depth to the wine.

Ray Jordan Wine Review πŸ†

93 Points
A beautiful example of a highly drinkable medium bodied wine from this famous Spanish variety. Captures the typical blackcurrant and slightly liqueur cherry characters of the variety. But then a lift of bright raspberry edges in with some nice spice. Smooth and almost velvety. Great drinking in the next few years while all those primary fruit characters are so evident.

Learn About Myattsfield Vineyard

Myattsfield Vineyard is a beautiful boutique winery nested in the Perth Hills region.

The original Myattsfield was the family farm in Camberwell, London. Joseph Myatt established a market garden on land owned by the Minet family. Over 175 years on, as descendants of Joseph, we’re now here in the Bickley Valley, Western Australia. The Bickley Valley is merely a small sub-region of the Perth Hills Wine Region, spanning from Chittering to Jarrahdale. This area was acknowledged for its distinct set of geographical and topographical influences impacting the wine quality in the region by the Geographic Indications Committee. It was granted GIC status as a gazetted wine region in 1999.

Who owns Myattsfield Winery? Owners Josh and Rachael are devoted to producing premium red and white wines with a personal, hands on approach. Their wines continue to gain accolades through the industry, with the likes of Ray Jordan ranking Myattsfield a top winery of the Perth Hills. We are pleased to offer you their extensive array of award-winning wines. Expect your palate to be taken on a journey of flavours, with some lesser known, but amazing varietals rarely found like Durif.

The Darling Scarp protects the Valley from maritime influences, making the climate more continental than Mediterranean in nature. This corresponds to cold nights and warm days. Valley walls reduce direct daylight hours, resulting in the daily maxima arriving later in the day and for a shorter period. At 300-350m above sea level, the Bickley Valley is 2-3 degrees cooler than Perth. Amongst the undulating terrain and aspects, site plays an important role in the valley. Elevated, northern-facing slopes produce significantly warmer sites better suited to dry red varieties. Southern-facing, lower sites produce cooler variations capable of producing better whites and lighter reds, while elevated, western-facing sites are ideal for fortified production.
