Out on a Limb – Carmody Estate

Handcrafted Wines from the Kalgan River Region, WA

Our Story

Tucked away in the cool, coastal beauty of Western Australia’s Kalgan River region, Out on a Limb – Carmody Estate is a family vineyard rooted in passion, persistence, and place. Established in 2013 by Ben Carmody, a veteran of over 25 years in the wine industry, and joined shortly after by partner Dee Goodgame, our vineyard was born from a bold leap of faith – and a deep love of wine.

Everything here is hands-on. From planting to pruning, Ben has led the vineyard development with care and craftsmanship, supported wholeheartedly by Dee and our extended family – including Ben’s parents, Bob and Lyn, and children Liam and Beth. Our cousin and close friend Liam brings our grapes to life as winemaker, keeping the process truly family-focused.

Each block in our vineyard is named after our beloved pets – a nod to the personalities that fill our lives and now grace our wine labels. Moby’s Block, home to our Pinot Noir, led the way with our first vintage in 2018. Rusty’s Block grows our vibrant Riesling, while our sparkling wines will soon celebrate Mango and Smudge, our feline companions.

We proudly grow Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Chenin Blanc and Riesling, using sustainable, environmentally conscious practices that reflect our respect for the land and its future.

Why Pinot Noir Thrives in the Kalgan River Region

The Kalgan River region offers a remarkable terroir that Pinot Noir vines love. Nestled between the coastal breezes of the Southern Ocean and sheltered by gentle hills, the area benefits from a long, cool ripening season – ideal for developing the complex, delicate flavours that Pinot Noir is known for.

At Carmody Estate, we’ve planted clones 777 and 115 in the traditional Burgundy style, with close spacing to encourage vine competition and intensity in the fruit. The result is a Pinot Noir that captures both the elegance of its French heritage and the wild character of Western Australia.

A Climate with Character

The cool maritime climate of the Kalgan River region is a winemaker’s dream. With consistent rainfall, chilly evenings and mild summer days, the area allows grapes to ripen slowly, preserving acidity and building layered aromas.

Our vineyard’s proximity to the river and ocean provides natural airflow that keeps the vines healthy and disease-resistant, reducing the need for intervention and allowing us to farm sustainably. It’s a region that speaks softly but leaves a lasting impression – just like the wines we craft from it.
