Smithbrook Sauvignon Blanc 2025

halliday 92 point score logo

Smithbrook Estate Sauvignon Blanc 2025 may be one of Western Australia’s best-value white wine releases. Finding one 90-plus-point review on a $20 Sauvignon Blanc would be impressive. This wine has received four separate results between 91 and 93 points, including recognition from Halliday Wine Companion, Ray Jordan, the International Wine & Spirit Competition and the Southern Forests and Valleys Wine Show.

Passionfruit, guava and gooseberry are joined by lemon, lime, lemongrass, cut grass and a gentle seasoning of white pepper. The palate is juicy and flavoursome, with a chalky, slightly pithy texture and a lively mineral quality running through its long, refreshing finish. It is the sort of Sauvignon Blanc that can disappear very quickly on a warm afternoon, but there is enough texture and regional character to make it far more interesting than the price suggests.

Why You Will Love It

  • Four separate accolades: Recognised by Halliday Wine Companion, Ray Jordan, the IWSC and the Southern Forests and Valleys Wine Show.
  • Classic Sauvignon Blanc flavour: Passionfruit, gooseberry, guava and tropical fruit are joined by lemon, lime and cut grass.

  • Bright and refreshing: Crunchy acidity carries the flavours through a long, juicy finish.
  • Easy to enjoy: It offers excellent flavour intensity without becoming heavy, sweet or overly complicated.

  • Texture: Chalky and gently pithy, giving the wine more substance and interest than a simple fruit-driven Sauvignon Blanc.

  • Finish: Long, crunchy and refreshing, with lingering gooseberry, citrus, lemongrass and passionfruit.

Winemaker’s Note

Smithbrook Senior Winemaker Ben Rector was particularly enthusiastic about the quality of the estate’s fruit during the 2025 vintage.

While the Sauvignon Blanc was still fermenting, he noted its abundant tropical character and exceptional vibrancy. He also described the growing conditions as excellent and considered the 2025 Pemberton white wines to be showing extraordinary promise.

Those early qualities are clearly present in the finished wine. Tropical fruit provides immediate flavour, while crunchy acidity and mineral freshness keep the palate precise and refreshing.

The 2025 Pemberton Vintage

Pemberton enjoyed an excellent season for white varieties in 2025.

High yields of pristine, high-quality fruit were reported across the region, with Sauvignon Blanc among the varieties that performed particularly well.

The region’s cool nights help grapes retain acidity and aromatic freshness as they ripen. This is particularly important for Sauvignon Blanc, where passionfruit, gooseberry, citrus and fresh herbal characters can quickly lose definition if the fruit becomes excessively ripe.

Smithbrook’s 2025 release captures the strengths of the vintage with abundant tropical fruit, refreshing acidity and a clean, mineral finish..

Viticulture and Winemaking

The quality of the 2025 Smithbrook Sauvignon Blanc begins with clean, healthy fruit grown under the excellent conditions experienced in Pemberton during the vintage.

The wine has been made with freshness and varietal purity at the forefront. Its tropical aromatics remain vivid, while precise acidity and chalky texture prevent the palate from becoming simple or overly fruity.

Rather than relying on obvious winemaking influence, the wine allows the character of Sauvignon Blanc and its Pemberton origins to remain the focus.

This results in a style that is lively and approachable, but still carries enough texture and mineral detail to reward attention.

Storage and Serving Tips

Serve Smithbrook Estate Sauvignon Blanc at approximately 8°C.

Avoid serving it icy cold straight from a refrigerator set around 4°C. Extremely cold temperatures can suppress the wine’s passionfruit, guava and gooseberry aromas.

Remove the bottle from the refrigerator approximately five minutes before serving. A normal white wine glass with a gently tapered bowl will allow the aromatics to open more effectively than a very small glass.

No decanting is required. Open the bottle shortly before serving and enjoy it while its tropical fruit and crunchy acidity are at their most vibrant.

Food Pairing Suggestions

  • Fresh oysters: The wine’s citrus and mineral qualities complement clean, salty seafood.
  • Grilled prawns: Passionfruit and lime provide freshness alongside sweet prawn meat.
  • Fish and chips: Crunchy acidity cuts through the batter and refreshes the palate.
  • Goat’s cheese salad: Sauvignon Blanc is a classic partner for creamy, tangy goat’s cheese.
  • Thai or Vietnamese salads: Tropical fruit and acidity work well with fresh herbs, chilli and lime.
  • Grilled chicken: Try it with chicken seasoned with lemon, herbs or gentle spice.
  • Fresh summer salads: Its gooseberry, citrus and herbal characters suit cucumber, avocado and leafy greens.
  • Fish tacos: Lime, tropical fruit and crunchy acidity complement fish, cabbage and fresh salsa.

Reviews and Awards

93 Points and Silver Medal 2025 Southern Forests and Valleys Wine Show

A particularly strong result from the regional show representing the area in which the wine was grown.

92 Points Halliday Wine Companion

It’s not a complex wine. But, geez, it delivers so much verity of the variety, with good flavour intensity, general freshness, pleasing, chalky texture and a juicy, bright finish. Boxes ticked. And look at the price – a bargain. Loaded with passionfruit, cut grass, gooseberry and dashes of white pepper and slate. Spot-on.

91 Points Ray Jordan

The minerally purity of Pemberton sauvignon blanc is on full display with this very tidy, young savvy. Typically bursting with tropical fruits, a little gooseberry, guava influence, and some bright passionfruit. The palate is precise, keen, and flavoursome, with a long, crunchy, refreshing finish.

91 Points and Silver Medal

International Wine & Spirit Competition

IWSC judges noted bright lemon and zesty lime aromatics, followed by vibrant gooseberry and lemongrass.

A pithy texture added interest to the palate before a long and refreshing finish.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Smithbrook Sauvignon Blanc 2025 a dry wine?

Yes. It is a dry Sauvignon Blanc with ripe tropical-fruit flavours balanced by refreshing acidity and a clean, mineral finish.

Is this wine sweet?

No. Passionfruit, guava and gooseberry can create a ripe and juicy impression, but the wine finishes dry, crunchy and refreshing.

How does it compare with Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc?

It shares familiar passionfruit, gooseberry and herbal characters, but its Pemberton origins bring a stronger mineral quality, chalky texture and slightly more restrained expression.

Why is it considered such good value?

It has received four separate results between 91 and 93 points despite an RRP of approximately $20. That combination of critical recognition, regional character and affordability is extremely uncommon.

What does chalky texture mean?

It describes a fine, gently dry sensation across the palate. This gives the wine greater shape and interest without making it feel heavy.

What does pithy texture mean?

Pithy refers to the subtle grip associated with citrus peel. It adds freshness and helps extend the wine’s finish.

Should Sauvignon Blanc be served very cold?

It should be chilled, but not icy. Approximately 8 to 10°C will keep it refreshing while allowing the tropical and citrus aromas to remain expressive.

Does it need to be decanted?

No. This wine is designed for freshness and can be enjoyed shortly after opening.

How long can I cellar it?

Ray Jordan recommends cellaring for up to three years. It is best enjoyed for its youthful fruit, but well-stored bottles should continue drinking successfully through approximately 2028.
