Tripe Iscariot Wilyabrup Chenin Blanc 2023

new halliday 95 point score

tripe.Iscariot Wilyabrup Chenin Blanc 2023 is an energetic and distinctive expression of Chenin Blanc from the heart of Margaret River. Fresh lemon, preserved citrus and lime zest immediately establish its bright, zesty personality. Generous spice adds complexity, while lemon sorbet-like acidity drives the wine through the palate and creates a genuinely mouth-watering finish.

There is also a fine phenolic grip that provides shape and subtle texture without taking away from the wine’s freshness. The result is racy and juicy rather than broad or heavy, with every element working towards energy, definition and drinkability.

This is a serious Chenin Blanc with impressive recognition, but it remains wonderfully refreshing and easy to enjoy.

Awards and Accolades

Trophy: White Varietal Trophy – 2025 National Wine Show of Australia

  • Selected as the leading wine from the show’s white varietal class.
  • The National Wine Show brings together wines that have already qualified through recognised Australian wine shows, making this an especially significant achievement for a small Margaret River producer.

96 Points and Top Gold – 2025 National Wine Show of Australia

The wine received 96 points and the leading gold medal in its class before progressing to the trophy judging.

95 Points – Jane Faulkner, Halliday Wine Companion

It’s racy and juicy, with more upfront acidity and drive than its Karridale sibling, which is a much more textural wine. Super spicy with fresh and preserved lemons, lime zest, lemon sorbet acidity and neat phenolics adding shape as much as a smidgen of texture. Mouth-watering and vibrant; just another cracking chenin blanc from a producer who understands it implicitly. Bravo.

Tasting Notes

  • Appearance: Bright and youthful, with a pale straw colour and subtle green-gold hues.
  • Aromatics: Fresh lemon, preserved lemon and lime zest are accompanied by fragrant spice.

  • Texture: Fine phenolics create a subtle grip and lightly textured mouthfeel.
  • Acidity: Bright and mouth-watering, with a lemon sorbet character that gives the wine energy and drive.

Wilyabrup Chenin Blanc

Wilyabrup sits in the northern half of Margaret River and is best known for producing many of the region’s leading Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay wines. However, this bottle demonstrates that Wilyabrup can also produce distinctive and highly expressive Chenin Blanc. The subregion’s gravelly soils and reliable ripening conditions allow the grapes to develop generous flavour, while careful picking preserves the bright acidity that gives this wine its energy. The finished wine combines ripe citrus and spice with a precise, mouth-watering structure. It has enough fruit and texture to feel substantial, but its defining characteristic is freshness rather than weight.
