Key Technical Terms Explained:

  • Vermentino: A white grape variety native to Italy, known for producing wines with fresh acidity, citrusy fruit flavours, and a slightly herbal character. It’s typically light, crisp, and refreshing, making it perfect for warm weather and seafood pairings.
  • Stainless Steel Fermentation: Stainless steel fermentation helps preserve the fresh fruit flavours and bright acidity of the wine, without introducing any oak influences. This keeps the wine crisp and clean, showcasing the true character of the grape.
  • Ceramic Egg Fermentation: The use of ceramic egg vessels for fermentation creates a unique shape that promotes natural movement of the wine. This enhances the texture and allows the wine to develop complexity while maintaining its fresh, fruity character.
  • Saline Finish: A mineral, slightly salty character on the finish that adds to the wine’s crisp, dry nature. It enhances the wine’s refreshment factor and makes it an excellent food-pairing wine.

Best Serving Temperature:

Serve this wine chilled, between 8-10°C, to fully appreciate its vibrant fruit flavours and refreshing acidity. A slightly cooler temperature will also enhance its crisp, dry finish, making it an ideal wine for warm days or casual gatherings.

Food Pairing Suggestions:

  • Grilled Prawns: The bright acidity and herbal notes of this Vermentino pair beautifully with grilled prawns, especially when marinated in garlic, lemon, and fresh herbs.
  • Pasta Salad: A light pasta salad with cherry tomatoes, rocket, and a tangy lemon vinaigrette complements the wine’s fruity and citrusy character, offering a refreshing contrast.
  • Fresh Seafood: Perfect with a variety of fresh seafood, such as oysters, mussels, or grilled fish, as the wine’s crispness and saline finish enhance the natural flavours of the ocean.

Learn About Myattsfield Vineyard

Myattsfield Vineyard is a beautiful boutique winery nested in the Perth Hills region.

The original Myattsfield was the family farm in Camberwell, London. Joseph Myatt established a market garden on land owned by the Minet family. Over 175 years on, as descendants of Joseph, we’re now here in the Bickley Valley, Western Australia. The Bickley Valley is merely a small sub-region of the Perth Hills Wine Region, spanning from Chittering to Jarrahdale. This area was acknowledged for its distinct set of geographical and topographical influences impacting the wine quality in the region by the Geographic Indications Committee. It was granted GIC status as a gazetted wine region in 1999.

Expect your palate to be taken on a journey of flavours, with some lesser known, but amazing varietals rarely found like Durif.

The Darling Scarp protects the Valley from maritime influences, making the climate more continental than Mediterranean in nature. This corresponds to cold nights and warm days. Valley walls reduce direct daylight hours, resulting in the daily maxima arriving later in the day and for a shorter period. At 300-350m above sea level, the Bickley Valley is 2-3 degrees cooler than Perth. Amongst the undulating terrain and aspects, site plays an important role in the valley. Elevated, northern-facing slopes produce significantly warmer sites better suited to dry red varieties. Southern-facing, lower sites produce cooler variations capable of producing better whites and lighter reds, while elevated, western-facing sites are ideal for fortified production.

History of Vermentino

Vermentino, a white grape variety native to Italy, particularly thrives in regions like Liguria and Sardinia, where it is known for producing aromatic, crisp wines. Its origins trace back to the Mediterranean, where it flourishes in warm climates, showcasing bright acidity and floral, fruity notes. Over the years, Vermentino has gained popularity beyond its Italian roots, making its way to various wine regions around the world.

In Western Australia, Vermentino began to establish itself in the late 20th century as winemakers sought to diversify their offerings with new and exciting varietals. The grape’s ability to adapt to the region’s warm climate and sandy soils, particularly in the Margaret River and Swan Valley regions, has allowed it to thrive. The first plantings occurred in the 1990s, and since then, it has garnered attention for its fresh and zesty profile, often featuring citrus and herbal notes.

As Western Australia’s wine industry developed, Vermentino became a key player in the pursuit of alternative varieties that could capture the region’s unique terroir. Local winemakers embraced its versatility, producing a range of styles from crisp, dry whites to more complex, textured versions that can develop beautifully with age. Today, Vermentino continues to grow in popularity, reflecting a broader trend towards exploring lesser-known varietals, and it stands out as a distinctive expression of Western Australia’s innovative wine scene.
