About Smallwater Estate

Smallwater Estate is located on the eastern side of the Geographe Wine Region, a few kilometres south of Donnybrook. The property was planted in 1993 by John Small and his late wife Robyn, originally with the idea of developing a marron farm and vineyard to grow contract grapes.

For around a decade, much of the fruit was supplied to other wineries, including Cape Mentelle, before John Small made the decision to bottle wines under the Smallwater Estate label. The first release in 2006 was a small run of Zinfandel, and the estate has since grown into one of the most recognised boutique wineries in the Geographe region.

The vineyard is planted to varieties including Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel, Chardonnay, Petit Verdot, Fiano and Saperavi. This gives Smallwater Estate a strong mix of classic WA styles and more distinctive alternative varieties, all produced with a focus on flavour, balance and vineyard quality.

Winemaking at Smallwater Estate

Smallwater Estate has built its reputation on small-batch, quality-focused winemaking. The estate is especially well regarded for its reds, with Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and Zinfandel among the key wines in the range.

The winery has received significant recognition across state and national wine shows. A major highlight was the Smallwater Estate 2022 Shiraz being awarded Best Australian Shiraz and Best WA Shiraz at the 2024 Great Australian Shiraz Challenge, reinforcing the strength of Geographe Shiraz and the quality coming from this Donnybrook estate.

Smallwater Estate also has a strong connection to its property, with the cellar door overlooking the vineyard, marron dams and rolling hills of Newlands. It is a true estate producer, combining viticulture, aquaculture and a warm country-cellar-door feel.
