“Highly aromatic, and highly pleasing as a result. Florals, brown spices such as star anise, dark plums, dabs of cedary oak and more. The fuller-bodied palate is plush, soft almost, with pliable, velvety tannins, then a little grip on the finish. I preferred this over its reserve because there’s a savouriness within and obviously less oak”

Tasting Notes

Aromatics: Mulberry, ripe plum and blackberry with olive, cocoa and mocha, plus a gentle savoury spice lift.
Palate: Lush and generously fruited, showing spicy cherry, dark berries and plum, supported by smooth, suedey tannins.
Finish: Long, poised and balanced, with dark fruit and subtle oak seasoning lingering cleanly.

Viticulture & Winemaking

Vineyards: Single vineyard, Frankland River, Great Southern WA
Season: 2023 was long and cool, harvested later than usual, allowing slow ripening and excellent natural balance.
Winemaking: Harvested in the cool of the night, fermented cool in static fermenters with gentle extraction over two weeks, then pressed to a mix of new and older larger format French oak for maturation.
Maturation: 12 months in French oak, then blended before bottling.
Also sold as: Export Ironstone Shiraz label.

Serve: 16 to 18°C
Decant: 30 to 60 minutes helps the spice and fruit unfurl
Cellar: Great now, will reward 5 to 10 years as it gains more savoury complexity
