Aylesbury Estate Tempranillo

At Aylesbury Estate, the 2020 Tempranillo is crafted with meticulous attention to detail, reflecting the winery’s commitment to quality and innovation. The winemaking process begins with fermentation in open fermenters for five days, allowing for optimal extraction of flavours. Following this, the wine is pressed to tank, where malolactic fermentation is completed before being matured for 12 months in seasoned 2- and 3-year-old barriques. This careful approach preserves the vibrant fruit character while adding subtle complexity.

In the glass, the Tempranillo presents a deep, inviting colour that hints at its richness. The nose is lifted with enticing aromas of dark cherries and plums, intermingled with a delicate hint of baking spices. This aromatic profile sets the stage for a captivating tasting experience, drawing you in with its bright and juicy character.

On the palate, this medium to full-bodied wine delivers a delightful array of flavours, dominated by juicy notes of ripe dark cherries, strawberries, and red plums. The wine’s texture is enhanced by fine, silky tannins and earthy mineral undertones, culminating in a long, smooth finish that lingers elegantly.

Tempranillo’s robust earthy and savoury qualities make it a fantastic match for a variety of dishes. It pairs beautifully with grilled meats and vegetables, as well as smoked foods. The wine also complements tomato-based dishes, making it ideal for classics like lasagne, pizza, and spaghetti bolognese. For a more adventurous pairing, enjoy it alongside Mexican cuisine, where it harmonises perfectly with tacos, nachos, burritos, and spicy chili. This versatile wine promises to enhance any dining experience.

James Halliday | 95 Points

“Fruit from the picturesque Ferguson Valley. Left 13 days on skins, matured in seasoned French oak for 10 months. Beautiful wine, here. Salted black licorice, mulberries, raspberries, lashings of blackberry and a waft of violets through the finish. I want to say pretty, but it has bigger muscles and more density than that, although elements of it are undoubtedly pretty. Very smart wine.”

A Rich Family Heritage

The story of Aylesbury Estate is one of rich history, deeply intertwined with the Gibbs family. Named after the town of Aylesbury in Buckinghamshire, England, the estate traces its origins back to James Dagley Gibbs, who emigrated to Western Australia in 1844. James settled in the Ferguson Valley, where his son Samuel became a pioneer in the region. Over five generations, the land has evolved from citrus orchards and stone-fruit fields to dairy farms and, now, a haven for beef cattle and premium wine grapes.

The very soil that Samuel tended in 1883 now flourishes as Aylesbury Estate, a testament to the enduring legacy of the Gibbs family. Today, Ryan Gibbs, the fifth-generation custodian, along with his wife Narelle and their children, continues to uphold the spirit of Aylesbury, ensuring that its legacy thrives for future generations.

The vineyard was established in 1998 by Ryan’s father, who envisioned creating wines that capture the essence of the Ferguson Valley. The focus has always been on sustainable practices, preserving the land’s clean soil and water to foster healthy vines and fruit.

The Ferguson Valley’s climate, reminiscent of the Mediterranean, provides the perfect conditions for grape cultivation. With its cool, wet winters and warm, dry summers, the estate’s north-facing slopes are ideally suited for Bordeaux varietals. The fertile soils, combined with the cooling sea breezes from the Indian Ocean, create an environment where our grapes can thrive.

At Aylesbury Estate, we remain committed to honouring our heritage while looking to the future, crafting wines that reflect our unique terroir and the legacy of the land.
