The Gnangara name has been part of Evans & Tate’s history for almost five decades. The wines became known for delivering fresh fruit flavours, easy drinkability and consistently good value. Evans & Tate has now retired the Gnangara SSB, making 2021 the final vintage ever produced.

Tasting Notes

Appearance: Pale straw with subtle green tinges.

Aroma: Passionfruit, lychee and gooseberry with lime zest, lemongrass, green apple and delicate herbal notes.

Palate: Fresh and zesty, with tropical fruit, green apple and pear. Lively acidity gives the wine a mouth-watering quality, while subtle fruit sweetness helps soften and balance the palate.

Finish: Refreshing and persistent, with lingering citrus, gooseberry and tropical fruit.

Serving and Cellaring

Serve well chilled at approximately 8°C.

If it has come straight from a very cold fridge, give it five minutes in the glass. Serving it too cold can temporarily hide its passionfruit, lychee and citrus aromas.

The 2021 has already benefited from some bottle development and is ready to enjoy now. This style was made for freshness and easy drinking rather than extended cellaring, so we recommend enjoying it now or over the next year.

What does SSB stand for?

SSB stands for Semillon Sauvignon Blanc. It is a white wine made by blending the Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc grape varieties.

The first grape named would normally be expected to make up the larger part of the blend. However, the exact percentages used in the 2021 Gnangara have not been publicly confirmed.

Why blend Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc?

The two varieties complement each other.

Sauvignon Blanc commonly contributes passionfruit, gooseberry, citrus and herbal flavours. Semillon can add body, texture and softer citrus flavours. Together, they create a wine that is aromatic and refreshing without feeling too sharp or thin.

What does “cold-fermented” mean?

During fermentation, yeast turns the natural grape sugar into alcohol. Fermentation creates heat, but the winemaker can carefully control the temperature.

What does “lively acidity” mean?

Acidity is what makes a wine taste fresh and mouth-watering, much like the refreshing quality of lemon or lime.

Lively acidity does not mean the wine tastes sour. It means the fruit flavours feel bright and the finish remains clean and refreshing.

What do “herbal notes” taste like?

Herbal notes are fresh aromas that may remind you of cut grass, lemongrass, green herbs or green capsicum. Nothing has been added to the wine. These aromas occur naturally in Sauvignon Blanc.
