Fairbrossen Pinot Noir

The Fairbrossen Bucket Chemistry Pinot Noir is part of their “Side Project Wines” range, sourced from the Manjimup region in Western Australia’s southwest. Inspired by Matt’s two vintages in Burgundy, this wine is crafted with no intervention, employing traditional French techniques to highlight its authenticity. Pinot Noir thrives in Manjimup due to the region’s unique climate and terroir. The cool maritime influences from the Southern Ocean, combined with well-drained soils, create ideal conditions for growing this delicate grape variety. The long ripening season allows for the development of complex flavours while retaining the essential acidity that Pinot Noir is known for. This combination of factors enables the grapes to express their true character, resulting in wines that are both vibrant and nuanced.

This Fairbrossen Pinot Noir embodies a distinctly ‘French style,’ showcasing elegance and finesse while already securing a spot on some of Perth’s finest wine lists. With its thoughtful production methods and regional character, it presents a wonderful expression of Australian Pinot Noir, appealing to both enthusiasts and connoisseurs alike.

This Pinot Noir pairs wonderfully with a range of dishes. Enjoy it alongside roasted duck or grilled salmon, where its bright acidity and rich fruit will beautifully complement the flavours. It also harmonises with earthy dishes, such as mushroom risotto or a wild mushroom and goat cheese tart. For a refreshing contrast, try it with a herb-infused salad or a charcuterie platter featuring prosciutto and pâté.

Learn more about Fairbrossen Winery

Located in the Perth Hills Wine Region, Fairbrossen wines are some of the regions best. With fruit on their very own Carmel Vineyard (2HA) and Margaret River (4HA)

The Margaret River vineyard is nestled at the head of the Wilyabrup Brook in the prime viticultural growing area of the Margaret River wine region. We established the 2.5 Ha vineyard in 1995 and planted Chardonnay (Gin Gin), Cabernet Sauvignon (Houghton clone), and Malbec (C6V11). In 2020, we acquired a further 2 Ha of the same site and currently planted Shiraz and Chenin Blanc.

The vineyard management is focused on low to moderate yields, and we maintain limited inputs when the season permits. Fruit grown from this vineyard makes our single vineyard wines. Winemaking employs a ‘hands-off’ approach, so the wines express the wonderful terroir of Wilyabrup within the Margaret River district.

At Fairbrossen Winery, grapes are pressed to taste, and no additives are used. Native yeasts are encouraged on all grape varieties.

The Climate Conundrum: Pinot Noir’s Unique Needs

Pinot Noir is often dubbed “the heartbreak grape” due to its sensitive nature. It thrives in cooler climates, making Western Australia’s typically warm and arid conditions particularly challenging for this variety. Achieving the right balance of temperature and sunlight is crucial. The Margaret River region, with its maritime influence, provides some respite from the intense heat. However, only a handful of local wineries successfully cultivate Pinot Noir, often utilising south-facing slopes to manage the intense afternoon sunlight and ensure optimal ripening conditions.

For Pinot Noir to truly flourish, cooler regions in the Great Southern, such as Mount Barker, Denmark, and Manjimup are essential. These areas benefit from the cooling breezes of the Southern Ocean, which help to regulate temperatures and prolong the ripening period of the grapes. This extended ripening is crucial for developing the complex flavours and aromatic qualities that are characteristic of top-quality Pinot Noir. Growers in these regions employ a range of techniques to manage the climate, including precise irrigation and canopy management, to protect the grapes from excessive heat and ensure even ripening.

Exploring Styles of Pinot Noir in Western Australia

Despite the climatic challenges, Western Australia has developed a diverse array of Pinot Noir styles, reflecting the ingenuity and creativity of local winemakers. This diversity is a testament to their ability to craft exceptional Pinot Noir in less-than-ideal conditions.

Western Australian Pinot Noirs range from delicate, ethereal expressions that evoke the elegance of Burgundy, to more robust, fruit-forward styles typical of New World wines. This spectrum of styles reflects the versatility of the grape and the innovative approaches of local winemakers. For instance, some producers focus on creating Pinot Noirs with vibrant red fruit flavours and a lighter body, while others aim for a richer, more complex profile with deeper flavours and a fuller body.

Historically, Pinot Noir from Western Australia faced scepticism, with many critics dismissing it as inferior. However, this perception is changing as the quality of local Pinot Noir gains recognition. Noteworthy wineries such as Picardy, Singlefile, Woodgate, Peos, and Smithbrook are leading the charge, showcasing the exceptional quality and diversity of Western Australian Pinot Noir. These producers have demonstrated that with the right techniques and dedication, Western Australia can produce Pinot Noir that rivals the best from around the world.

A Look at History: The Origins of Pinot Noir in WA

The story of Pinot Noir in Western Australia is one of perseverance and passion. Although its presence in the region is not as long as in some of the renowned Old World wine regions, the initial plantings of Pinot Noir represent a significant milestone in the state’s viticultural history. The dedication of early winemakers who ventured to grow this challenging grape highlights their commitment to exploring its potential in Western Australia’s diverse terroirs.

These early pioneers faced numerous challenges as they sought to cultivate Pinot Noir in the state’s unique conditions. Their efforts laid the foundation for the thriving Pinot Noir industry we see today. As viticultural practices have evolved, so too has the quality and recognition of Western Australian Pinot Noir.

Vineyard Management: Perfecting Pinot Noir

Successfully growing Pinot Noir in Western Australia requires meticulous vineyard management and a deep understanding of the grape’s needs. Techniques such as precise canopy management, soil conditioning, and innovative irrigation practices are essential in overcoming the challenges posed by the warm climate.

Some growers focus on elevated, cooler sites to help regulate temperatures and extend the ripening period. Others experiment with different clones and rootstocks to find the best match for local conditions. These strategies ensure that Pinot Noir grapes reach their full potential, resulting in wines of exceptional quality.
