Happs Three Hills Shiraz 2022

Big Body ~ Complex ~ Smooth

After a long gap between releases, the Three Hills Shiraz is back, and the 2022 vintage is absolutely worth the wait. Grown in the deep south of Margaret River at Karridale, this is a cool-climate leaning Shiraz with serious personality, darker fruit, savoury complexity and that “moreish” minerality that keeps you pouring another glass.

It’s also a big-deal wine on paper: 96 points from Ray Jordan and 96 points from Wine Orbit, both calling out the depth, richness and balance.

Why You Will Love It

  • A rare, premium Shiraz from Margaret River’s deep south, distinctly different to most Aussie Shiraz styles
  • Blueberry, plum, charcuterie, truffle and white pepper complexity that feels grown-up and savoury
  • Full bodied but refined, with silky tannins and a mineral, graphite-like feel
  • 14 months in French oak puncheons (50% new) for polish without losing freshness

Accolades

96 Points – Ray Jordan
Rich, deeply intense fruit with floral spice, dark chocolate and plum, plus excellent tannin and oak management and plenty happening on the palate.

96 Points – Wine Orbit
Immensely complex with blackberry, charcuterie, toasty oak and warm spice, concentrated yet refined, with fine grainy tannins and a long satisfying finish.

Tasting Notes

  • Aromatics: Blueberry, plum, rhubarb and truffle, with charcuterie, white pepper and savoury spice.
  • Palate: Medium to full bodied with elegance and intensity. Raspberry, beetroot, cherry and dark fruits, plus earth, leather, dark chocolate and rosemary. Finishes with silky soft tannin and great persistence.
  • Winemaker detail (extra layer): Raspberry, mulberry and plum skin with rose petal and violets, plus iodine, beetroot, ironstone, pink peppercorn and quinine. Mineral, graphite-like tannins and fine acidity.

Viticulture and Winemaking

Region: Karridale, Margaret River, Western Australia (Three Hills Vineyard)
Variety: 100% Shiraz

Vineyard:

  • Planted 1994, dry grown, loam over laterite, 30 hectares
  • Strong maritime influence, around 10 km from both the Southern and Indian Oceans
  • 100% handpicked

Vintage conditions: Mild, wet spring then hotter than average summer temperatures, especially around Christmas, producing ripe, fleshy reds.

Maturation: 14 months in 50% new French oak puncheons.

Analysis:

  • Alcohol: 14.0%
  • pH: 3.75
  • Acidity: 5.9
  • Residual sugar: < 0.1 g/L

Serving and Cellaring

  • Serve: 16 to 18°C
  • Decant: 60-120 minutes helps the truffle, spice and savoury notes really open up.
  • Cellar: Drinking well now, and the structure and oak handling suggest it will reward medium to longer term cellaring.

Food Pairing

  • Chargrilled lamb cutlets with rosemary
  • Pepper steak or slow-cooked beef
  • Mushroom dishes, especially with thyme or truffle
  • BBQ ribs
  • Aged cheddar or manchego
