Sixty 40 Cabernet Shiraz 2023

Henty View Cabernet Shiraz

A Creative Blend of Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon.

The 2023 ‘Sixty40’ is a masterful blend of two iconic Australian grape varieties: Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon. Sourced from the renowned Geographe wine region, this wine beautifully showcases the best attributes of both varietals, offering a harmonious balance of dark fruit, spice, and velvety tannins. It’s fruit forward all the way!

On the nose, the ‘Sixty40’ reveals an inviting bouquet of ripe dark fruit, with blackberry, plum, and a hint of blackcurrant leading the way. Underneath the fruit, there’s a touch of spice, with subtle notes of pepper, cloves, and a whisper of chocolate, giving the wine complexity and depth. On the palate, the wine is medium bodied, with the fruit flavours mirrored on the tongue and complemented by the wine’s well-structured tannins. The Cabernet Sauvignon lends a touch of freshness, while the Shiraz contributes richness and a rounded mouthfeel.

The wine has been carefully matured in a blend of mostly 2-year-old American and French oak barrels for 12 months. This subtle oak influence adds vanilla, cedar, and a gentle smoke character, all while maintaining the vibrant fruit expression of the blend.

This versatile red wine pairs wonderfully with a variety of hearty dishes. Enjoy it with grilled steaks, particularly those with a charred crust, or a roast lamb with rosemary and garlic. It’s also an excellent match for a rich beef stew or BBQ ribs. For a more casual pairing, try it with a platter of aged cheeses, such as cheddar or gouda, and some charcuterie.

Ferguson Wine Region

The Ferguson Valley and surrounds (Geographe) sits about 15 to 30 mins East and Southwest of Bunbury and is home to a number of small boutique wineries. It’s majestic rolling hills, and the changes between the prevailing summer easterlies to the afternoon sea breeze makes for a diverse set of microclimates.

The Geographe region has a rich and vibrant history in grape cultivation, earning its esteemed wine appellation status in 1999. While relatively young, this appellation has increasingly attracted new winemakers since the 2000s. Named after Geographe Bay, initially explored by French navigator Baudin in 1801 aboard his ships, the Geographe and the Naturaliste, the region now hosts 57 winegrowers, 26 producers, and cultivates 36 different grape varieties.

The terroir of the Geographe Wine Region is influenced by its maritime climate, with warm summer temperatures moderated by Indian Ocean breezes year-round. With an average annual temperature of 22.4°C, supplemented by water from the Collie River, the region is ideal for viticulture. Winters bring heavy rainfall, varying from 500-800mm a year. Geographe contributes ten percent to Western Australia’s wine industry, with vineyards reaching a maximum altitude of 400 meters, situated on limestone soil that holds water well along the coast, promoting drainage and mineral-rich content. Coastal vineyards feature low soil fertility, extending ripening times for smaller berries with intense aromas and concentrated flavours, while inland vineyards benefit from higher fertility derived from sandy loam and gneissic rock.
