Sauvignon Blanc Semillon 2023

Icarus Sauvignon Blanc Semillon

Produced by Burch Family Wines, the Icarus SBS of 2023 is a pure expression of Margaret River and showcases the wonderful value this blend brings out of the region.
Overseen by the skills of Howard Park winemaker Nic Bowen, the fruit ripened by the summer sun, cooled by breezes from the Indian and Southern Oceans and harvested during the warm nights.

This is fresh, with a lively core of passionfruit and herbal flavours. It finishes with a crisp, vibrant finish.

Sauvignon Blanc-Semillon pairs beautifully with seafood like oysters, grilled fish, and shellfish, as well as light poultry dishes, fresh salads, and goat’s cheese. Its crisp acidity also complements herbaceous vegetables like asparagus and artichokes, or citrusy and herb-forward cuisines like Thai or Vietnamese.

Certified by Sustainable Winegrowing Australia. Certification requires an independent audit against the Australian Wine Industry Standards of Sustainable Practice – Viticulture (AWISSP-VIT1) and/or Australian Wine Industry Standards of Sustainable Practice – Winery (AWISSP-WIN1)

a very positive review from a customer buying icarus wines from Partners in wine wa.

When discussing SSB (Semillon-Sauvignon Blanc) and SBS (Sauvignon Blanc-Semillon) wines, the primary distinction lies in the order of the grape varieties used, which can influence the wine’s character, flavour profile, and overall style. Both blends are popular in regions like Western Australia, where the climate and terroir create ideal growing conditions for these varietals.

SSB (Semillon-Sauvignon Blanc)

In an SSB blend, Semillon is the dominant grape variety, often making up the larger percentage of the blend, with Sauvignon Blanc complementing it. This order suggests that the wine is crafted with a focus on the characteristics of Semillon, which typically lends the wine a fuller body and a rounder mouthfeel. Semillon is known for its citrus, stone fruit and grassy flavours, often displaying notes of lemon, lime, and peach, along with a characteristic waxy texture.

In Western Australia, particularly in regions like Margaret River, SSB wines often showcase Semillon’s ability to age gracefully. These wines can develop complex aromas of honey, toast, and even a slight nuttiness as they mature. The inclusion of Sauvignon Blanc adds acidity and tropical freshness, contributing bright, herbaceous notes and enhancing the overall complexity. This blend is often recognised for its ability to pair beautifully with seafood and lighter dishes, making it a popular choice for summer drinking.

SBS (Sauvignon Blanc-Semillon)

Conversely, an SBS blend places Sauvignon Blanc in the leading role, typically comprising a higher percentage than Semillon. This configuration highlights the crisp, zesty nature of Sauvignon Blanc, which is celebrated for its vibrant acidity and pronounced fruit flavours, such as gooseberry, passionfruit, and green apple. The herbaceous qualities of Sauvignon Blanc are generally tropical, offering a lively and refreshing profile.

In Western Australia, especially in regions like the Great Southern & Margaret River, SBS wines often emphasise the Sauvignon Blanc’s freshness and aromatic intensity. The addition of Semillon provides a roundness to the blend, smoothing out the sharp edges of the Sauvignon Blanc and adding layers of complexity. As a result, SBS wines can be more approachable when young, making them a favourite for casual sipping or social gatherings.

Regional Influence

The climate of Western Australia plays a crucial role in shaping the characteristics of both SSB and SBS wines. The Mediterranean climate in regions like Margaret River allows for optimal ripening of grapes, resulting in wines with balance and depth. The cooling ocean breezes help maintain acidity in the grapes, which is essential for crafting refreshing white wines.

Conclusion

Ultimately, the choice between SSB and SBS comes down to personal preference and the specific wine’s production style. SSB wines, with their Semillon-forward character, offer a richness and potential for ageing that can be incredibly rewarding. In contrast, SBS wines deliver a vibrant and refreshing experience, ideal for immediate enjoyment. Whether you’re exploring the lush landscapes of Western Australia or enjoying a glass at home, both blends represent the region’s commitment to producing exceptional white wines that capture the essence of their terroir.
