Montague Estate Dextra 2021

Vinification
The 2021 Dextra is a blend of 57% Merlot, 29% Cabernet Franc, and 14% Petit Verdot. After fermentation, the wine was aged for 13 months in a mix of seasoned Hungarian and French oak hogsheads, which impart subtle oak character while allowing the fruit to shine.

Tasting Notes
The name Dextra (meaning ‘right hand’ or ‘right side’ in Latin) pays homage to the exquisite wines of Bordeaux’s Right Bank, which are predominantly Merlot-based. These wines have long been a quiet favourite due to their softer mouthfeel and rich fruit weight. The 2021 Dextra opens with an inviting bouquet of bright violet and red berries. As the wine breathes, the nose develops further complexity, revealing glimpses of black olive and charcuterie. On the palate, soft blue fruits chase the aromas, blending seamlessly with notes of raspberry & baking spice. This is a soft, fine-boned wine that is both pretty and elegant, gentle yet thought-provoking.

Food Pairing
The 2021 Dextra is a wonderful companion to a variety of dishes, including grilled lamb with rosemary, mushroom risotto, or a selection of soft cheeses.

Why You’ll Love It:

  • Elegant and Well-Balanced: A harmonious blend of Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot, showcasing vibrant red berry and violet aromas.
  • Soft and Fine-Boned: A pretty, elegant wine with soft blue fruit flavours and gentle, chalky tannins that highlight its linear profile.
  • Complex Bouquet: The nose evolves with hints of herbs, violets, blood, sandalwood, and touches of black olive and charcuterie over time.
  • Perfect for Short-Term Enjoyment: Drink now to enjoy the vibrant fruit characters and medium body, while the wine is at its freshest.
  • Versatile Pairing: Pairs beautifully with grilled lamb, mushroom risotto, or soft cheeses, making it a versatile choice for a range of meals.

Ray Jordan 93 Points –
This is a 57% merlot, 29% cabernet franc and the rest petit verdot. Has had 13 months in a mix of seasoned Hungarian and French oak hogsheads. Has a bright violet and red berry perfume. IT’s medium bodied with a lovely aromatic. The red berry characters are well to the fore. It’s a medium bodied wine, displaying elegance and poise. The chalky tannins accentuate its linear palate profile. Well-crafted and idea as a wine for drinking in the short term, while those vibrant buoyant fruit characters are dominant.
