Montague Estate Mataro
The Mataro grapes for this wine were sourced from Frankland River, a region renowned for its ideal climate for growing this versatile grape. The fruit was carefully de-stemmed and crushed into an open fermenter. After fermentation and the completion of malolactic fermentation, the wine was transferred to a combination of new and seasoned French oak barrels (20% new). After 8 months in oak, the wine was bottled early to preserve the freshness of the fruit, achieving perfect harmony between the oak and the fruit.
Tasting Notes
The bouquet of the Montague Estate Mataro is bright and fresh, with inviting hints of oregano, sage, and light vanillin cocoa, woven together with a soft waft of tobacco leaf and fennel seed. On the palate, the wine delivers a delicious rasp of loganberry and dark cherry, fusing seamlessly with notes of Italian herbs and a gentle forest bramble. This is an airy, soft expression of Mataro, perfectly suited for warm spring days, showcasing the grape’s versatility and elegance.
