Montague Estate Shiraz

Vinification
The Montague Estate Shiraz is crafted from 100% Shiraz grapes sourced from the Wilyabrup region of Margaret River. The grapes were selectively harvested on 21 March 2021, then immediately crushed into open fermenters, where they were co-inoculated with selected yeast and malolactic bacteria. During fermentation, the wine was gently plunged and pumped over for 12 days to extract maximum flavour and colour. After fermentation, the wine was pressed and completed fermentation in a combination of new (20%) and seasoned French oak hogsheads. It was then racked and returned to barrel for maturation, where it spent a further 12 months in oak prior to bottling in August 2022.

Tasting Notes
The Montague Estate Shiraz opens with an inviting bouquet of soft espresso, dark forest fruits, and the faintest hints of clove and bacon fat, drawing you in with its complexity. On the palate, the wine reveals layers of dark plum, green peppercorn, thyme, and blackberry bramble, all underscored by delicate glimpses of graphite, sage, cocoa powder, and liquorice. This wine beautifully captures the essence of Margaret River Shiraz, with its balance of ripe fruit, savoury spices, and subtle oak influence.

Food Pairing
This Shiraz pairs wonderfully with dishes such as grilled steak, roast lamb, or slow-braised beef, as well as rich, umami-packed dishes like a mushroom ragù or charcuterie.

Why You’ll Love It:

  • Rich and Complex: Soft espresso, dark forest fruits, clove, and bacon fat lead into dark plum, thyme, and blackberry bramble on the palate.
  • Subtle Oak Influence: Maturation in a mix of new and seasoned French oak adds depth with hints of graphite, sage, and cocoa powder.
  • Classic Margaret River Shiraz: A beautiful example of the region’s signature style, with balance, elegance, and intensity.
  • Versatile Pairing: Ideal with grilled steak, roast lamb, or rich, savoury dishes like mushroom ragù and charcuterie.
  • Drink Now or Cellar: Enjoy now or cellar for up to [Insert years] to see further development.

Ray Jordan 94 Points –
This is a solid shiraz using 20% new French oak and the rest seasoned. Got about 12 months in oak. Has a savoury ripe plum character with a little earthiness and savoury notes. It has a bright vibrancy about it with a juicy plush fruit expression. It’s a very youthful wine displaying a bright palate feel.
