Montague Semillon

The 2022 Semillon from Montague Estate was harvested in the early morning of 21 February 2022. The grapes were then crushed and clarified immediately via flotation. The clarified juice was transferred to seasoned French oak barriques, where it was fermented to dryness. After fermentation, the wine was matured in oak for a further 6 months before being racked, filtered, and bottled in August 2022.

At Montague Estate, we’ve always believed that Semillon deserves more recognition, especially here in Western Australia. The perfect companion to Asian cuisine and fresh seafood, it’s high time this incredible variety was given the attention it deserves. The 2022 vintage opens brightly with fresh notes of green apple, honeysuckle, and melon rind. As the complexity builds, flavours of papaya emerge, along with hints of lanolin and freshly grated ginger, seamlessly blending with a suite of citrus fruit. The wine is lithe, zippy, and showcases a slight salinity, in keeping with our maritime environment. This wine is a must-try for those who appreciate a crisp, refreshing white with depth.

Why You’ll Love It:

  • Bright and Complex: Opens with green apple and honeysuckle, developing into papaya, citrus, and hints of ginger and lanolin.
  • Crisp and Zippy: A refreshing, lively palate with a touch of salinity that reflects its maritime terroir.
  • Perfect Pairing: Ideal with seafood, particularly soft-shell crab dumplings or fish cakes with lemongrass and coriander.
  • Drink Now or Cellar: Enjoy immediately or cellar for up to 5 years for evolving complexity.
  • Best Serving Temperature: For optimal enjoyment, serve at 8°C. This temperature will bring out the most aromas and flavours. If the wine has been stored in a very cold fridge, simply leave it out for 15 minutes before serving to allow it to reach the ideal temperature.

Ray Jordan – 93 Points

This gets six months in older barriques. Fermented in tank and then matured in oak. Has a distinctive and lovely lemon zest aroma with traces of subtle lemon pith and an almost guava-like character. A trace of fresh cut grass brings another dimension to the wine with its honeysuckle nuances most appealing. I like the weight and palate feel of this wine which is perfect current drinking but has some cellaring potential. Lower alcohol at 11.8% makes it ideal for current drinking.
