Myattsfield Montepulciano

Native to central Italy, this remarkable Montepulciano hails from the Perth Hills, sourced from the region’s first planting of Montepulciano in Western Australia, the grapes are hand-harvested and fermented in open-top vessels. This careful approach allows the fruit’s inherent qualities to shine, making it a true reflection of its unique terroir.

On the nose, expect a lifted bouquet with a subtle touch of oak, tucked in behind the fruit. The palate reveals juicy dark fruit flavours—think ripe blackberries and plums—balanced by velvety tannins that contribute to its soft and supple mouthfeel. After open fermentation, the wine is matured in a combination of ceramic eggs and oak hogsheads, resulting in a seamless, integrated profile that showcases fine tannins alongside a nuanced hint of oak. If you enjoy a savoury Tempranillo then this is a must try!

This wine’s accolades speak volumes, having earned a gold medal and the trophy for Best Alternative Variety at the 2023 Perth Hills Wine Show, as well as medalling at the 2023 Geographe Wine Show.

Learn more about Myattsfield

Myattsfield Vineyard is a beautiful boutique winery nested in the Perth Hills region.

The original Myattsfield was the family farm in Camberwell, London. Joseph Myatt established a market garden on land owned by the Minet family. Over 175 years on, as descendants of Joseph, we’re now here in the Bickley Valley, Western Australia. The Bickley Valley is merely a small sub-region of the Perth Hills Wine Region, spanning from Chittering to Jarrahdale. This area was acknowledged for its distinct set of geographical and topographical influences impacting the wine quality in the region by the Geographic Indications Committee. It was granted GIC status as a gazetted wine region in 1999.

The Darling Scarp protects the Valley from maritime influences, making the climate more continental than Mediterranean in nature. This corresponds to cold nights and warm days. Valley walls reduce direct daylight hours, resulting in the daily maxima arriving later in the day and for a shorter period. At 300-350m above sea level, the Bickley Valley is 2-3 degrees cooler than Perth. Amongst the undulating terrain and aspects, site plays an important role in the valley. Elevated, northern-facing slopes produce significantly warmer sites better suited to dry red varieties. Southern-facing, lower sites produce cooler variations capable of producing better whites and lighter reds, while elevated, western-facing sites are ideal for fortified production.

Montepulciano

Montepulciano is a red grape variety native to central Italy, celebrated for producing rich, medium to full-bodied wines with deep colour and robust tannins. Thriving in regions like Abruzzo, Marche, and Lazio, this grape benefits from the warm Mediterranean climate, which allows for the development of ripe, dark fruit flavours. Montepulciano wines are known for their juicy black cherry, plum, and berry characteristics, but they also exhibit distinctive savoury notes, making them somewhat similar to Tempranillo. This savouriness often includes hints of earthiness, spice, and herbal undertones, contributing to their complexity.

The history of Montepulciano dates back centuries, with evidence of its cultivation in Italy as far back as the 18th century. The grape gained prominence in the 20th century, particularly with the rise of Abruzzo as a key wine-producing region. Over the years, it has become a staple in various blends and is frequently paired with Sangiovese in iconic Italian wines. Its savoury profile makes it an excellent companion to a range of dishes, from rich pasta sauces to grilled meats, enhancing the dining experience with its balanced acidity and robust structure.

In Western Australia, Montepulciano has found a new home, particularly in the Perth Hills, where the cool climate and diverse soils provide ideal growing conditions. The region’s first plantings of Montepulciano marked a significant step in diversifying the Australian wine landscape, allowing winemakers to explore alternative varieties that resonate with local terroir. Wineries like Lions Mill, La Fattoria and Myattsfield in the Perth Hills lead the charge.

Myattsfield in particular is a pioneer in this movement, embracing Montepulciano and crafting exceptional wines that reflect both its Italian heritage and the unique characteristics of the Perth Hills. The vineyard’s commitment to quality is evident in its meticulous hand-harvesting and innovative fermentation techniques, including open fermentation and maturation in ceramic eggs and oak hogsheads.

With accolades such as the gold medal and trophy for Best Alternative Variety at the 2023 Perth Hills Wine Show, Myattsfield Montepulciano exemplifies the successful adaptation of this historic grape in Western Australia. Its savoury complexity and vibrant fruit make it a standout choice for wine lovers, showcasing the potential of Montepulciano to thrive in new environments while delighting palates across the globe.
