Myattsfield Vineyard Vermentino

Sourced from the northern end of the Perth Hills wine region, Myattsfield Vineyard’s 2024 Vermentino is a standout white wine. This exceptional wine is matured in a thoughtful combination of stainless steel and ceramic egg, which enhances its vibrant character while preserving the varietal’s unique qualities.

In the glass, the bouquet is both perfumed and appealing, showcasing the distinct characteristics of Vermentino. Aromas of juicy pear & zesty lemon sorbet are ever present.

On the palate, the Myattsfield Vermentino of 2024 impresses with its glossy texture and refreshing profile. Juicy notes of pear and sherbet are complemented by an apple crumble type character, delivering a lively burst of flavour. The finish reveals a delightful dryness and a pronounced, saline character that enhances its drinkability, making it a truly enjoyable wine.

Vermentino pairs beautifully with a variety of dishes, making it a delightful choice for any meal. One fantastic option is grilled prawns skewered and marinated in garlic, lemon, and fresh herbs, which complement the wine’s bright acidity and herbal notes. Another great pairing is a light pasta salad with cherry tomatoes, rocket, and a tangy lemon vinaigrette, which highlights the wine’s fruitiness while providing a refreshing contrast.

Learn more about Myattsfield

Myattsfield Vineyard is a beautiful boutique winery nested in the Perth Hills region.

The original Myattsfield was the family farm in Camberwell, London. Joseph Myatt established a market garden on land owned by the Minet family. Over 175 years on, as descendants of Joseph, we’re now here in the Bickley Valley, Western Australia. The Bickley Valley is merely a small sub-region of the Perth Hills Wine Region, spanning from Chittering to Jarrahdale. This area was acknowledged for its distinct set of geographical and topographical influences impacting the wine quality in the region by the Geographic Indications Committee. It was granted GIC status as a gazetted wine region in 1999.

The Darling Scarp protects the Valley from maritime influences, making the climate more continental than Mediterranean in nature. This corresponds to cold nights and warm days. Valley walls reduce direct daylight hours, resulting in the daily maxima arriving later in the day and for a shorter period. At 300-350m above sea level, the Bickley Valley is 2-3 degrees cooler than Perth. Amongst the undulating terrain and aspects, site plays an important role in the valley. Elevated, northern-facing slopes produce significantly warmer sites better suited to dry red varieties. Southern-facing, lower sites produce cooler variations capable of producing better whites and lighter reds, while elevated, western-facing sites are ideal for fortified production.

History of Vermentino

Vermentino, a white grape variety native to Italy, particularly thrives in regions like Liguria and Sardinia, where it is known for producing aromatic, crisp wines. Its origins trace back to the Mediterranean, where it flourishes in warm climates, showcasing bright acidity and floral, fruity notes. Over the years, Vermentino has gained popularity beyond its Italian roots, making its way to various wine regions around the world.

In Western Australia, Vermentino began to establish itself in the late 20th century as winemakers sought to diversify their offerings with new and exciting varietals. The grape’s ability to adapt to the region’s warm climate and sandy soils, particularly in the Margaret River and Swan Valley regions, has allowed it to thrive. The first plantings occurred in the 1990s, and since then, it has garnered attention for its fresh and zesty profile, often featuring citrus and herbal notes.

As Western Australia’s wine industry developed, Vermentino became a key player in the pursuit of alternative varieties that could capture the region’s unique terroir. Local winemakers embraced its versatility, producing a range of styles from crisp, dry whites to more complex, textured versions that can develop beautifully with age. Today, Vermentino continues to grow in popularity, reflecting a broader trend towards exploring lesser-known varietals, and it stands out as a distinctive expression of Western Australia’s innovative wine scene.
