West Cape Howe
West Cape Howe is a long-established Great Southern producer known for wines with flavour, balance and structure, shaped by some of the region’s most mature vineyard resources. Based in Mount Barker, the winery has built a strong reputation for approachable, consistently well-made wines that reflect both regional quality and a very practical understanding of what people enjoy drinking.
About West Cape Howe
West Cape Howe was founded in 1997 and has grown into one of the better-known wine names in the Great Southern. Today, the winery is owned by four Western Australian families and remains closely tied to Mount Barker, where the winery and cellar door are based at the picturesque Langton vineyard.
That long-term local ownership gives West Cape Howe a grounded feel. It is a winery built on vineyard access, regional knowledge and continuity, rather than a label chasing trends. The result is a range that feels dependable, regional and easy to come back to.
Mount Barker, mature vineyards and the West Cape Howe style
The winery’s base at Langton is an important part of the story. Established in 1978, the vineyard includes some of the more mature vines in the Great Southern, which gives West Cape Howe access to fruit with real depth and consistency. That strong vineyard foundation helps shape wines with balance, flavour and structure rather than anything forced or overworked.
The broader range also benefits from fruit sourced across the Great Southern, including Frankland River and Porongurup, as well as the Perth Hills. That gives West Cape Howe more regional breadth while still keeping a clear Great Southern identity at the centre of the wines.
A winery shaped by experience and practicality
West Cape Howe has a very practical winemaking identity, and that is part of its appeal. Gavin Berry has led the winery since 2004, bringing deep Great Southern experience and a clear focus on making wines that people genuinely enjoy drinking. There is skill and detail behind the range, but also a welcome lack of fuss.
The winery’s vineyard and production approach also reflects a broader long-term mindset, with sustainable practices, minimal herbicide use and a strong focus on soil and plant health. That gives the wines extra substance and fits the overall feeling of a winery built for the long run.
