It stands to reason that if the Chenin is good, then the Verdelho will be just as impressive—and here’s the proof. The Nikola Estate Verdelho of 2023 bursts with super punchy and vibrant flavours that leap from the nose and seamlessly transition onto the palate. Expect a delightful medley of tropical fruits, including luscious melon and juicy pear, all accented by a refreshing hint of lemon rind. This wine is pure and fragrant, showcasing abundant flavour that lingers beautifully on the long finish.

The vintage of 2023 was marked by warmer conditions compared to previous years, which allowed the harvest to commence at the beginning of January. These optimal conditions resulted in excellent fruit ripeness from well-managed vineyard blocks, ensuring the quality and intensity of the grapes.

Hailing from the Swan Valley, this Verdelho is crafted entirely from the region’s renowned fruit. For this wine, the grapes were picked from our 1958 plantings and made using 100% free-run grape juice. The winemaking process involved a cool fermentation lasting 14 days with VL2 yeast, after which the wine was filtered and bottled in July 2022. Tasting notes reveal lifted aromas of honeysuckle, ripe citrus, fresh figs, and quince paste. On the palate, it presents a wonderfully explosive array of waxy tropical fruit, melon, nashi pear, and luscious lemon butter, culminating in a persistently alluring finish.

This Verdelho has already received accolades, including a Bronze Medal at the Perth Royal Wine Show 2022 and an impressive 94 points from Ray Jordan in WA Wine: Review. With its vibrant character and refreshing profile, this wine is sure to please those who seek a true expression of the Swan Valley’s unique terroir.

Nikola Estate meticulously crafts wines from its original grapevines, blending tradition with modern winemaking techniques. This winery is rooted in the rich heritage of the Yukich family, who have been the dedicated caretakers of these historic vines for four generations. The Yukich family’s journey began in 1929 when young Croatian immigrant Nikola Yukich arrived in the Swan Valley, filled with dreams of establishing a vineyard in his new home. Starting with modest plantings on his property, he nurtured his aspirations, and over time, his efforts blossomed alongside the family’s growing presence in this esteemed wine-producing region. The dedication and hard work of Nikola laid a strong foundation for what would become a lasting legacy.

In 1989, the Yukich family took a significant step forward by acquiring 117 acres from the Hardy family, a crucial segment of the original Houghton estate. This acquisition led to the establishment of Oakover Wines, further cementing the family’s commitment to the wine industry. The evolution of their venture continued in 2019 when they acquired a neighbouring property, along with the remaining landholdings of Houghton Wines, marking the genesis of Nikola Estate. This strategic expansion not only enhanced their vineyard resources but also deepened their connection to the region’s winemaking heritage.

Today, Nikola Estate Wines uniquely express the terroir of Western Australia and the rare old vines from which they are crafted.
