Nikola Estate Swan Valley Chenin Blanc

The latest vintage from Nikola Estate showcases the unique character of the Swan Valley, where warmer conditions compared to previous years led to an early harvest starting in January. This shift in climate resulted in optimum fruit ripeness, allowing for the selection of excellent quality grapes from well-managed vineyard blocks.

This Chenin Blanc is crafted entirely from premium fruit sourced from our historic 1930 and 1963 vineyard blocks. Each bunch was carefully handpicked and then chilled to 12 degrees overnight to preserve freshness. Following this, the grapes were whole-bunch pressed into stainless steel tanks, where they settled for three hours before being transferred to a mix of 40% new French oak and 60% older French oak. The wine underwent wild fermentation and spent seven months maturing in barrel on lees, enhancing its complexity and flavour.

In the glass, this wine presents an appealing pale straw colour with green hues. On the nose, you’ll be greeted by delightful aromas of floral wildflowers, green nashi pear, and lemon wax. These enticing scents lead into a palate bursting with honey lemon and citrus notes, finishing with subtle hints of vanilla from the oak influence.

A wine that will continue to bottle age over the next 15 years.

Nikola Estate meticulously crafts wines from these original grapevines. This is a winery that is forged on tradition, embodying the knowledge and foresight that has been faithfully passed down through four generations of the Yukich family, caretakers of these historic vines.

In 1929, the Yukich family’s journey began in the Swan Valley, courtesy of a young Croatian immigrant named Nikola Yukich, who harboured aspirations of establishing a vineyard upon relocating to Western Australia. Commencing with modest plantings on his property, the enterprise steadily flourished alongside the family’s growing presence in this esteemed wine-producing district.

In 1989, the Yukich family expanded their holdings by acquiring 117 acres from the Hardy family, an integral segment of the original Houghton estate, subsequently establishing Oakover Wines. This venture evolved further in 2019, with the acquisition of neighbouring property and the remaining landholdings of Houghton Wines, marking the genesis of Nikola Estate.

Today, Nikola Estate Wines uniquely expresses Western Australian terroir and of the rare old vines from which they are crafted.
