The 2023 Plantagenet Wines Three Lions Riesling is a reflection of the unique challenges and rewards of the 2023 Great Southern vintage. With a bright citrus backbone and a clean, long finish, this wine showcases the region’s ability to produce exceptional white wines, even under challenging conditions.

Why You Will Love It:

  • Vibrant Aromatics: Bursting with delicate floral aromas of rose petals, aromatic musk, and orange blossom, this Riesling is immediately inviting.
  • Crisp, Citrus Core: Focused on a vibrant limey and citrus profile, the wine’s natural acidity carries its fruit character beautifully, providing a refreshing, balanced mouthfeel.
  • Complex Mineral Notes: A complex minerality on the palate elevates the wine, adding depth to the lively fruit flavours.
  • Long, Clean Finish: The wine concludes with a lingering, crisp finish, leaving a lasting impression of freshness and complexity.

Tasting Notes:

  • Appearance: Very pale straw, reflecting the wine’s fresh, youthful character.
  • Bouquet: The nose opens with vibrant aromas of rose petals, floral notes, and hints of aromatic musk and orange blossom. These delicate scents set the stage for the complexity that follows.
  • Palate: On the palate, the wine is focused around a zesty lime and citrus core, with layers of mineral complexity. The high natural acidity provides a clean, crisp backbone, carrying the fruit flavours across the palate. The wine is generous in weight yet remains focused and refreshing.

Food Pairing Suggestions:

  • Fresh Seafood: Perfectly paired with freshly shucked oysters or sashimi, where the wine’s acidity and mineral character complement the freshness of the seafood.
  • Spicy Dishes: The wine’s natural acidity and citrus profile make it a great match for Thai or Indian cuisine, helping to balance out spice and heat.
  • Cheese Pairing: Enjoy with creamy goat cheese or a sharp cheddar to contrast the wine’s refreshing acidity.

Best Serving Temp:

Serve well chilled at 8-10°C to bring out the wine’s vibrant aromas and crisp acidity. If stored in the fridge, leave out for 10 minutes prior to serving.

Technical Terms Explained:

  • Reductive Winemaking: A winemaking approach that limits oxygen exposure during fermentation to preserve the wine’s fresh fruit character and aromatic qualities.
  • Lees Aging: The process of aging the wine on its yeast cells (lees), which adds texture and complexity to the palate.
  • Free Run & Pressings: Free run juice is the juice that flows freely from the grapes when they are pressed, while pressings are the juice extracted from the remaining grape skins and pulp. These are fermented separately and blended later to create the desired balance of flavour and texture.

Since 1968, Plantagenet Winery has proudly remained a family-owned business, epitomising the pioneering spirit of Tony Smith, who laid the groundwork for the first vineyards in the Great Southern region. Passing through the hands of ‘Lionel Samson Sadleir’s Group,’ the oldest family business in Western Australia, the brand is now under the stewardship of Tom Wisdom, a sixth-generation descendant of Lionel Samson, and his wife Jo. They’re dedicated to preserving the legacy of Plantagenet Wines within the Samson family while enhancing its reputation for crafting distinctive wines that authentically capture the essence of the Great Southern terroir.

Tony Smith’s journey began with a modest inheritance, leading him to acquire Bouverie Farm in the Plantagenet Shire in 1968. By planting Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon grapes, he sowed the seeds of Plantagenet Winery’s future success. The fruits of his labour, harvested in 1974, yielded wines of remarkable promise, prompting Smith to convert a local apple packing shed into a winery. Here, he meticulously crafted Shiraz with regional spiciness and full-bodied Cabernet, embracing the cool climate conditions of the Great Southern. His foresight extended to planting additional varieties such as Riesling, Pinot Noir, and Chardonnay, further enriching the offerings of Plantagenet Vineyard.

Though Tony passed away in November 2021, his enduring legacy thrives in the vineyards and landscapes of the Great Southern, a testament to his pioneering spirit and gentlemanly demeanour.

Tom Wisdom, former Director of Western Australia’s venerable Lionel Samson Sadleir’s Group, assumed the role of Managing Director of Plantagenet Wines during their ownership for three years. With profound expertise in viticulture and decades of involvement in the wine industry, both Tom and Jo are deeply committed to preserving the Plantagenet brand within the Samson family fold and nurturing its heritage as a quintessentially Australian icon.

“Having been intimately involved in the wine industry and the journey of Plantagenet Wines for many years, we’re excited to seize the opportunity to guide this historic brand towards a vibrant future.”
