Redshed Rose 2024

The Redshed Estate Rosé 2024 is a bright, beautifully refreshing Margaret River rosé made from Shiraz grown on the estate’s easterly facing vineyard in Metricup. Picking the grapes early helps retain freshness and lively natural acidity, while gentle pressing minimises the extraction of colour and tannin from the Shiraz skins. The result is an attractive pale salmon rosé with expressive strawberry and summer berry flavours rather than the weight and structure normally associated with Shiraz.

A short period on lees brings an extra layer of texture and savoury complexity. Floral notes of rose petal and violet sit alongside the fruit, leading into a clean, mineral finish that makes this a particularly easy wine to return to. It is a versatile, crowd-pleasing rosé made for warm afternoons, relaxed lunches and uncomplicated drinking.

Why You Will Love It

  • Made from Margaret River Shiraz: Shiraz provides generous strawberry and summer berry flavours while remaining fresh and delicate in this rosé style.
  • Grown specifically for rosé: Fruit from an easterly facing vineyard is harvested with freshness and bright flavour in mind.
  • Gently handled: Light pressing limits the extraction of heavy colour, tannin and bitterness from the grape skins.
  • More than simple fruit: A short period on lees adds texture and a subtle savoury element to the palate.
  • Fresh and floral: Rose petals, violets and delicate dried herbs provide complexity alongside the ripe berry fruit.

Shiraz Made as Rosé

Shiraz is usually associated with deeply coloured red wine, but it can also produce wonderfully expressive rosé.

Much of a red wine’s colour and tannin comes from leaving the juice in contact with the grape skins during fermentation. For this rosé, the Shiraz is pressed gently so only a small amount of colour and structure is extracted.

This preserves the variety’s generous strawberry and berry flavours while producing a lighter, brighter and more refreshing wine. It offers the flavour of Shiraz without the body, tannin or richness of a conventional red.

The Early 2024 Margaret River Vintage

The 2024 Margaret River vintage arrived unusually early and progressed rapidly following warm, dry growing conditions.

For rosé, picking at the right moment is particularly important. The fruit needs enough ripeness to provide expressive flavour, but it must also retain the acidity required to keep the finished wine lively and refreshing.

Early harvesting helped capture the bright berry and floral characters of Shiraz before the grapes developed the deeper flavours and higher sugar levels desired for full-bodied red wine.

What Does Lees Contact Add?

Lees are the fine yeast particles that remain after fermentation.

Allowing the wine to spend a short period in contact with these lees adds gentle texture and savoury complexity without taking away from its youthful fruit. It can make the middle of the palate feel slightly rounder and more complete.

In this wine, the lees contact provides a subtle counterpoint to the fresh berry flavours, giving the rosé more interest while maintaining its easy-drinking character.

Serving and Cellaring

Serve Redshed Estate Rosé 2024 well chilled at approximately 8 to 10°C.

If it has been stored at room temperature, refrigerate it for around two to three hours before serving. Avoid serving it ice-cold, as extremely low temperatures can suppress its strawberry and floral aromas.

This is a rosé designed around freshness and youthful fruit. It is ready to drink now and will be at its most vibrant within approximately two to three years of vintage.

Once opened, reseal the bottle and refrigerate it. It should remain fresh for around two to three days.

Food Pairing

  • Fresh seafood: Try it with prawns, grilled fish, calamari or a simple seafood platter.
  • Summer salads: Strawberry, watermelon, beetroot or goat’s cheese salads complement its berry and floral characters.
  • Antipasti: Prosciutto, olives, marinated vegetables and soft cheeses work well with its savoury edge.
  • Lightly spiced dishes: Pair it with Thai salads, Vietnamese rice-paper rolls or mildly spiced chicken.
  • Mediterranean food: Grilled vegetables, flatbreads and tomato-based dishes are natural partners.
  • Picnic food: Serve it with cold chicken, quiche, fresh bread and a selection of cheeses.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Redshed Estate Rosé 2024 sweet?

The emphasis is on fresh berry fruit, floral aromas, savoury detail and refreshing acidity rather than obvious sweetness. Its ripe strawberry character can give an impression of fruitiness without making the wine feel heavy.

Why is this rosé made from Shiraz?

Shiraz naturally provides generous strawberry, raspberry and floral characters. When it is picked early and pressed gently, it can produce a vibrant rosé with plenty of flavour but very little tannin.

What does lightly pressed mean?

The winemaker applies gentle pressure to extract the juice without drawing too much colour, tannin or bitterness from the grape skins. This helps produce the wine’s pale salmon colour and delicate texture.

What does lees contact do to rosé?

Lees contact adds a little more texture and savoury complexity. It helps the palate feel complete without covering the wine’s fresh fruit.

Should this rosé be decanted?

No. It is intended to be served fresh and chilled directly from the bottle.

How long can I cellar it?

This style is best enjoyed young. Drink it now or over the next two to three years while its strawberry, floral and summer berry flavours remain vibrant.

I have been buying my wines from Kirk for about two years now and I have never had a bad experience or wine. I love the fact that the wines are all West Australian, so supporting local and lower carbon footprint. He delivers when it’s convenient for me and brings the wine to my door. Wines are all good quality and well priced, especially the cleanskins. Highly recommended
