Robert Oatley Signature Series Sauvignon Blanc Semillon of 2025 is a fresh, vibrant expression of one of Margaret River’s classic white wine blends.

Made with 87% Sauvignon Blanc and 13% Semillon, it combines the lifted aromatics and energetic acidity of Sauvignon Blanc with the citrus character and additional mid-palate weight of Semillon. Juicy tropical fruit, melon and fresh citrus lead into a lively, dry palate with subtle herbal notes and a distinctive citrus edge. The two varieties were fermented separately before blending, allowing the winemaking team to find the right balance between freshness, flavour and texture.

Why You Will Love It

  • A Margaret River classic: Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon is one of the region’s most distinctive and reliable white wine styles.
  • Fresh but not thin: Semillon gives the wine additional weight through the middle of the palate, preventing it from feeling sharp or one-dimensional.
  • Juicy and aromatic: Sauvignon Blanc supplies vibrant citrus, tropical fruit and subtle herbal characters.
  • A distinctive citrus edge: Fresh lemon, lime and grapefruit-like flavours give the wine energy and definition.
  • Balanced rather than aggressive: It offers Sauvignon Blanc freshness without becoming excessively grassy or sharply acidic.
  • Immediately approachable: There is no need to cellar or decant it before enjoying a bottle.

A Classic Margaret River White Blend

Margaret River is internationally recognised for Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon, but Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon have also become an important part of the region’s identity. Both varieties are traditionally associated with Bordeaux, where they have been blended for centuries. Margaret River’s maritime climate provides an excellent Australian home for them.

The region receives generous sunshine, helping the grapes develop flavour, while its coastal influence moderates extreme temperatures. This allows Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon to ripen while retaining the natural acidity required for a fresh, balanced white wine.

Margaret River examples are generally more restrained than intensely tropical New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc. Semillon adds further weight and complexity, creating a style that is refreshing but not overly sharp or herbaceous.

The 2025 Blend

The 2025 Robert Oatley Sauvignon Blanc Semillon contains 87% Sauvignon Blanc and 13% Semillon. This Sauvignon Blanc-dominant composition keeps the wine aromatic, bright and energetic. The smaller Semillon component works quietly underneath, adding citrus flavour and extra presence through the middle of the palate.

The result is slightly fuller and more rounded than Robert Oatley’s straight Sauvignon Blanc while remaining crisp, dry and refreshing. It is a particularly useful style for drinkers who enjoy Sauvignon Blanc but want a wine with a little more texture and less overt herbaceousness.

Viticulture and Winemaking

Selected parcels of Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon were sourced from across the Margaret River wine region. The two varieties were fermented separately. This allows each parcel to be monitored individually and helps preserve the particular characteristics of both grapes. Sauvignon Blanc can be handled to retain its lifted aromatics, fresh fruit and natural acidity, while Semillon can be developed for citrus flavour and palate weight. Once fermentation was complete, the separate components were blended to achieve the desired balance.

The wine received no oak maturation. This prevents vanilla, toast and woody flavours from interfering with the bright fruit and allows the citrus, tropical and herbal characters to remain clear. The uncomplicated winemaking approach does not mean the wine is simple to produce. Selecting the right parcels and finding the correct balance between the two varieties are essential to creating a blend that feels seamless rather than tasting like two separate wines.

Serving and Cellaring

  • Serve Robert Oatley Sauvignon Blanc Semillon at approximately 8 to 10°C. If it has been stored in a standard refrigerator, take the bottle out approximately five to ten minutes before serving. This will allow the aromas and flavours to become more expressive while the wine remains refreshingly chilled.
  • The wine does not require decanting. Simply open and serve. It is at its most vibrant while young, when the tropical fruit, citrus and herbal characters are at their freshest. It should continue drinking well for approximately three to four years under suitable storage conditions.

Food Pairing

  • Fresh oysters: The wine’s citrus edge and mouthwatering acidity make it a natural match for freshly shucked oysters.
  • Garlic prawns: Bright fruit and acidity cut through the richness of butter, olive oil and garlic.
  • Grilled fish: Try it with barramundi, snapper or whiting served with lemon and fresh herbs.
  • Fish tacos: Lime, coriander and lightly spiced seafood work particularly well with the wine’s tropical and citrus characters.
  • Sushi and sashimi: Its clean, unoaked style complements delicate raw fish without overpowering it.
  • Goat’s cheese salad: Sauvignon Blanc’s acidity and herbal qualities pair naturally with goat’s cheese and fresh green herbs.
  • Seafood pasta: Serve it with prawns, chilli, lemon, parsley and olive oil rather than a heavy cream sauce.
  • Thai or Vietnamese dishes: The fresh fruit and acidity suit aromatic herbs, lime and moderately spicy flavours.
  • Summer vegetables: Asparagus, zucchini, peas and fresh salads complement the wine’s subtle herbal character.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this Sauvignon Blanc or Semillon?

It is a blend of both varieties. The wine contains 87% Sauvignon Blanc and 13% Semillon, so Sauvignon Blanc remains the dominant variety. Semillon is included to add extra citrus flavour and mid-palate weight.

What does SBS mean?

SBS is a common Australian abbreviation for Sauvignon Blanc Semillon. The first variety named usually makes up the larger proportion of the blend. In this wine, Sauvignon Blanc represents 87%.

Is Sauvignon Blanc Semillon the same as Semillon Sauvignon Blanc?

They contain the same two grape varieties, but the order generally indicates which grape is dominant. Sauvignon Blanc Semillon is normally led by Sauvignon Blanc, creating a more aromatic and energetic style. Semillon Sauvignon Blanc usually contains more Semillon and can taste rounder, softer and more citrus-driven.

Is the wine dry?

Yes. This is a dry white wine. Its tropical and fruit-salad flavours may smell generous, but the wine does not have noticeable sweetness. Crisp acidity and a clean citrus finish keep it fresh.

Is it similar to New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc?

There are some similarities, particularly the bright aromatics and refreshing acidity. However, this Margaret River blend is generally more restrained and textural. Semillon provides additional weight and citrus character, making it less intensely tropical and less sharply herbaceous than many Marlborough Sauvignon Blancs.

Does it contain oak?

No. The wine receives no oak maturation. This preserves its bright fruit, clean citrus flavours and refreshing acidity.

What does fermented separately mean?

The Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon components are made individually before being combined. This gives the winemakers greater control over each variety and allows them to decide exactly how much of each component is required in the final blend.

How long can I cellar it?

It is best enjoyed while its fresh fruit is vibrant, although properly stored bottles should continue drinking well for approximately three to four years.

What temperature should I serve it?

Serve it at approximately 8 to 10°C.

Extremely cold temperatures can hide its fruit and texture, while serving it too warm may make the acidity feel less refreshing.
