Vino Volta ‘So Well Then’ Fiano 2024

ray jordan wine review of 93 points, logo.

Vino Volta So Well Then Fiano 2024 is a wonderfully expressive Swan District white that combines generous flavour, intriguing texture and mouthwatering natural acidity. Fiano originates in the warmer regions of southern Italy, making it particularly well suited to the sunshine and warmth of the Swan District. Its small berries naturally deliver concentrated flavour, while the variety’s ability to retain acidity allows the wine to remain lively and refreshing.

Bright lime, grapefruit and pear are joined by elderflower, honeysuckle and dried herbs. Short skin contact adds aromatic intensity and a gentle savoury grip, while natural fermentation with high grape solids in older barriques builds texture, subtle creaminess and a lightly nutty complexity. It is much more than a simple crisp white. There is enough citrus freshness for warm-weather drinking, but also the weight, texture and savoury detail to make it a fascinating food wine.

Why You Will Love It

  • Two excellent reviews: Awarded 93 points by both Ray Jordan and Halliday Wine Companion.
  • A different kind of white wine: Fiano combines bright citrus freshness with considerably more texture and savoury complexity than many familiar white varieties.
  • Textural without becoming heavy: Short skin contact, high solids and barrel fermentation add depth while vibrant acidity keeps the wine energetic.
  • Subtle barrel influence: Older barriques build texture and complexity without covering the wine in obvious new-oak flavour.
  • Naturally fermented: Wild yeast contributes greater aromatic and savoury complexity.
  • Made by Swan Valley specialists: Vino Volta focuses on varieties and vineyards that flourish in Western Australia’s warmer regions.

Reviews and Accolades

93 Points Ray Jordan

Fiano is a variety that has found a home in most areas of the state. This one is interesting. It has had a little time with skin contact and was naturally fermented, which has given it that deeper, richer intensity that is so appealing. The wild ferment certainly brought additional palate and aromatic complexity. It is sort of nutty and creamy, but with a fine acid and citrus edge controlling it as it extends through to a nice long finish. There is plenty to like about this wine.

93 Points Halliday Wine Companion, Katrina Butler

Pretty formidable in flavour power, this is dialled-up fiano that speaks true to the variety, albeit amplified. Slightly waxy and glossy, with white florals and muskmelon, it arrives via slow waves before picking up the pace with racy acidity, grapefruit pith, lime sherbet and underripe pear. A slight pull of phenolics resets the palate for the next sip.

Tasting Notes

  • Appearance: Bright pale straw with youthful green highlights.
  • Aromatics: Lifted elderflower, honeysuckle and white florals are layered with lime, grapefruit, pear and a touch of dried herbs.
  • Palate: Generous citrus and orchard fruit flow across a textured, medium-bodied palate.
  • Texture: Brief skin contact and a high-solids barrel fermentation create gentle creaminess, waxiness and subtle savoury grip.
  • Complexity: Older oak and natural fermentation introduce restrained nutty and lightly savoury characters without obscuring the fruit.
  • Acidity: Bright natural acidity gives the wine energy and prevents its generous texture from feeling heavy.
  • Finish: Long, lively and gently savoury, with lingering lime, grapefruit pith, dried herbs and subtle nuttiness.

Why Fiano Works in the Swan District

Fiano comes from southern Italy, particularly Campania, and is naturally comfortable in warm, sunny conditions.

The variety grows in small berries and relatively small bunches, concentrating flavour in the grapes. Importantly, it can retain excellent natural acidity even as its citrus, floral and tropical flavours ripen.

That makes Fiano an exciting match for the Swan District. The region’s warmth allows generous flavour to develop, while the grape’s acidity gives the finished wine freshness, focus and length.

The result is a white wine that tastes ripe and expressive without becoming broad, soft or tiring.

The Meaning Behind “So Well Then”

The name is a playful reference to the Italian word “allora”, an expression that can mean “so”, “well then” or “in that case”.

It is a fitting name for an Australian interpretation of an Italian variety. The wine respects Fiano’s natural flavour, texture and acidity while expressing those qualities through the warm conditions of the Swan District and Vino Volta’s distinctive winemaking.

Serving and Cellaring

Serve at approximately 9 to 11°C.

Avoid serving it excessively cold, as very low temperatures can hide the wine’s floral aromas, texture and subtle nutty complexity. If it has been stored in a cold refrigerator, allow the bottle to sit out for approximately 10 minutes before pouring.

The wine is drinking beautifully now, particularly with food. Its natural acidity and savoury structure should also allow it to develop through approximately 2028.

With further bottle age, the fresh lime, florals and pear may gradually move towards preserved citrus, honey, nuts and more pronounced savoury complexity.

Food Pairing Suggestions

  • Grilled prawns: Citrus freshness and gentle texture work beautifully with sweet shellfish and charred flavours.
  • Grilled or roasted fish: Try it with snapper, barramundi or salmon served with lemon and fresh herbs.
  • Crab or lobster: The wine has enough palate weight for richer seafood while its acidity keeps the combination fresh.
  • Herb-roasted chicken: Floral, citrus and dried-herb characters complement chicken seasoned with rosemary, thyme or oregano.
  • Creamy pasta: The wine’s acidity cuts through cream or cheese-based sauces while its texture matches their richness.
  • Mediterranean vegetables: Pair it with grilled zucchini, fennel, capsicum, eggplant or artichoke.
  • Soft and semi-hard cheeses: Fresh goat’s cheese, pecorino or young Gouda complement its citrus and lightly nutty character.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does Fiano taste like?

Fiano commonly produces citrus, pear, floral, herbal and lightly nutty flavours.

This expression shows lime, grapefruit, elderflower, honeysuckle and pear, together with dried herbs and subtle nutty complexity from its fermentation and maturation.

Is Fiano sweet or dry?

This is a dry white wine.

Its ripe fruit, floral aromas and rounded texture can create an impression of generosity, but bright acidity and a savoury finish keep it fresh and balanced.

Is Fiano similar to Sauvignon Blanc?

Both varieties can offer citrus freshness, but Fiano generally has more texture, palate weight and savoury complexity.

If Sauvignon Blanc is usually bright and aromatic, Fiano can feel broader and more layered, often showing floral, nutty, herbal and waxy characters alongside its citrus fruit.

What does short skin contact add to the wine?

Brief skin contact extracts additional aroma, flavour and gentle phenolic structure from the grapes.

In this wine it contributes floral and herbal intensity, greater texture and a subtle savoury grip without turning it into a heavily tannic or orange-style wine.

What is a high-solids fermentation?

It means the juice retains a proportion of the fine grape material rather than being completely clarified before fermentation.

These grape solids can contribute additional flavour, texture and complexity. They also provide more material for the natural yeast to interact with during fermentation.

Does barrel fermentation make this wine taste heavily oaked?

No. The wine is fermented in older barriques, which contribute much less oak flavour than new barrels.

The barrels primarily build texture and complexity, allowing the citrus, floral and herbal characters of Fiano to remain clearly defined.

Why is Fiano suitable for a warm region?

Fiano naturally retains acidity as it ripens and develops flavour.

This allows it to produce generous, fully flavoured wines in warm regions while remaining fresh and balanced. That combination makes it particularly promising for the Swan District and other warm Australian wine regions.

Is this wine vegan friendly?

Yes. Vino Volta identifies the 2024 So Well Then Fiano as vegan friendly.

What temperature should it be served at?

Serve it at approximately 9 to 11°C.

This is cool enough to emphasise its freshness but warm enough for the floral aromas, texture and subtle nuttiness to remain expressive.

How long can I cellar it?

It can be enjoyed now or cellared through approximately 2028.

Young bottles emphasise lime, florals and energetic acidity. With time, the wine may develop more preserved-citrus, nutty and savoury complexity.

I have been buying my wines from Kirk for about two years now and I have never had a bad experience or wine. I love the fact that the wines are all West Australian, so supporting local and lower carbon footprint. He delivers when it’s convenient for me and brings the wine to my door. Wines are all good quality and well priced, especially the cleanskins. Highly recommended
