FAQ / Technical Terms 🤔

  • Lees Stirring (Batonnage): The process of stirring the wine in contact with its lees (dead yeast cells) after fermentation, which adds texture, richness, and complexity to the wine.
  • Oak Nuances: Refers to the subtle flavours imparted to the wine from the oak barrels used during aging. In this Pinot Noir, oak provides structure and complexity without overwhelming the fruit character.
  • Truffle Oil: A subtle, earthy note found in some wines, often adding a savoury depth that pairs beautifully with the fruit and spice notes in the wine.
  • Cool Climate Growing Conditions: A term used to describe regions with cooler temperatures, which are ideal for growing Pinot Noir, as they allow the grapes to ripen slowly and develop complex, nuanced flavours.

Learn About Wignalls Wines

Wignalls Winery is located about 10 minutes from Albany, in the Great Southern Wine Region.

Wignalls Wines was established on the outskirts of the then Town of Albany in 1982, after extensive research and investigations into “Terroir” (Environmental factors creating wine quality) by our founder Dr Bill Wignall.

Climatological data from the nearby weather station at Albany’s airport revealed that Albany’s growing conditions in Spring and Summer closely resembled those of the renowned wine-growing region of Burgundy in central France. This discovery prompted us to embark on an experiment with Burgundian varieties such as the then-unknown Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Sauvignon Blanc – all of which are now well-established in Australia.

The initial vintages at the Wignalls Vineyard yielded remarkable results, with both Pinot Noir and Chardonnay garnering Trophies and Gold medals. Subsequently, our family estate has continued to excel, accumulating over sixty Trophies and Gold’s to date, both domestically and, more significantly, internationally. This recognition underscores our commitment to producing exceptional wines that stand out on the global stage.

MORE THAN 60 GOLDS and 35 TROPHIES have been won by our family estate to date, both Domestically and Internationally.

Albany Wine Sub-Region

The Albany wine region, located in Western Australia’s Great Southern wine zone, is celebrated for its breathtaking landscapes and exceptional viticulture. Nestled along the southern coast, this area benefits from a cool maritime climate influenced by the Great Southern Ocean. This unique environment allows for a long growing season, which is ideal for cultivating high-quality grapes, particularly Burgundian varieties like Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.

Albany’s diverse terroir features well-drained soils and a mix of coastal and inland influences, resulting in wines with distinct flavours and aromas. While the cooler climate suits delicate varietals, grape types such as Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon are better suited to the warmer inland areas, like Mount Barker & Frankland River, where conditions are more conducive to their robust growth.

Wignalls Wines, a standout producer in Albany, exemplifies the region’s potential. Their commitment to sustainable practices and meticulous vineyard management has earned them acclaim for crafting exceptional wines that truly reflect Albany’s character. Each bottle showcases the unique interplay between the region’s terroir and varietals.

Beyond its wineries, Albany captivates visitors with stunning coastal scenery, lush forests to it’s West, and rich wildlife. As part of the Great Southern region, it’s an emerging destination for wine enthusiasts eager to discover the charm and sophistication of Western Australian wines.
