As you would expect from this warm year, there’s plenty of grunt and power in the shiraz, and yet it shows remarkable softness and plushness, no doubt a result of the old dry-grown, low-yielding vines. It spends 18 months in a mix of American and French oak, and I think that American component is quite important. Aromas of dark fruits, a little spice and a slight hint of pepper lead into a full-bodied, generously flavoured palate that will handle extended cellaring with ease.

The Woody Nook Shiraz 2024 pours a deep, inky red that hints at its intense character. On the nose, a compelling blend of spice and white pepper greets you, leading into a complex bouquet of black plums, ripe mulberries, and hints of vanillin and coconut from the heavy-toasted American oak. As the wine opens up, its aromatic layers continue to evolve, creating an inviting complexity.

On the palate, this Shiraz presents a full-bodied and generous profile. Ripe black plum and mulberry flavours dominate the mid-palate, enhanced by a savoury black pepper spice that adds dimension. The influence of American oak is evident, with hints of vanilla and char rounding out the flavour profile. The finish reveals a chalky limestone edge, balancing the wine’s richness with a touch of elegance.
