Organic Vineyard Merlot Shiraz 2022

Bindoon Estate Merlot Shiraz | Certified Organic Winery

Hello and welcome! If you’ve landed on this page, chances are you’ve enjoyed a bottle of Bindoon Estate wine, perhaps from one of their popular Farmers Markets. Renowned for their vibrant presence in the regional WA market scene, Bindoon Estate has become a favourite with people looking to support small, boutique wineries. If you’re looking to explore more of their range, you’ve come to the right place!

The 2022 Bindoon Estate Shiraz-Merlot blend presents a vibrant, deep ruby hue in the glass, hinting at its robust character while benefiting from the Merlot’s softer, rounder profile. The nose is inviting, offering an enticing bouquet of ripe dark fruits, including blackberries and plums, with the Merlot contributing additional layers of red fruit, such as cherries and raspberries. Subtle spicy nuances of nutmeg and a touch of earthy richness from the Shiraz are beautifully balanced with the Merlot’s smooth, velvety undertones.

On the palate, this blend is medium-bodied with a soft, velvety mouthfeel that showcases the best qualities of both varietals. The core of dark forest fruits and ripe plums from the Shiraz is beautifully softened by the Merlot, which adds a lush, smooth texture and flavours of red berries. The delicate hints of spicy nutmeg are complemented by the Merlot’s plush fruitiness, creating a harmonious and approachable wine.

This Shiraz-Merlot blend pairs excellently with barbecued meats, such as juicy steaks or charred lamb chops. The wine’s fruit-forward profile and spicy undertones complement the smoky, savoury flavours of grilled dishes, while the Merlot’s softness enhances the overall balance. It’s also a versatile choice for hearty casseroles or rich, aged cheeses, and its smooth texture makes it a delightful match for a variety of dishes.

About Bindoon Estate Winery

The Bindoon Estate vineyards are situated to the north of Bindoon, encompassing ten acres of land. Certified organic by ACO, the vineyard boasts a rich history with vines planted in the early 1970s and 1980s. The estate grows a selection of grape varieties including Chardonnay, Shiraz, Merlot, and Cabernet.

In 2005, we made the decision to cease irrigation for our red grape varieties, aiming to enhance the local regional character, flavour, and overall quality of our wines. This shift allowed the vines to develop deeper roots, contributing to a more robust and distinctive flavour profile.

By 2008, we introduced a foliage spray program using liquid kelp, which strengthened the skin of the foliage and fruit. This innovation provided better protection against sun, wind burn, disease, desiccation, and frost damage, while also offering the benefits of leaf and ground-absorbed fertilisers. To conserve moisture, we opted for ploughing the vineyard instead of mulching.

In 2012, we implemented a new strategy to further preserve the improved flavour and quality of our grapes by rolling out home-grown organic meadow hay between the vine rows. This method helped to conserve ground moisture and reduce ground temperature, stabilising the vineyard’s production levels.

Today, Bindoon Estate produces a range of wines, including Shiraz, Merlot Shiraz, Chardonnay, Blush Rosé, Liqueur Shiraz (port), and Liqueur Pedro (sweet sherry). The grapes for the Blush Rosé and Liqueur Pedro are sourced from nearby, ensuring a diverse and high-quality selection.
