Winepilot reviewed the 2020 vintage of Byron & Harold The Protocol Shiraz, highlighting it as a premium Margaret River Shiraz with richness, fruit depth and cellaring ability.

Tasting Notes 

Colour: Deep crimson with dark ruby tones.

Aromatics: Blackberry, dark plum and ripe cherry, with layers of pepper, spice, cocoa, subtle earth and polished oak.

Palate: Medium to full-bodied and smooth, with dark berry fruit through the middle. The 2020 vintage gives the wine a more settled feel, with the fruit, oak and tannin now nicely integrated.

Finish: Long and savoury, with lingering plum, blackberry, dark chocolate, spice and fine tannins.

About the Wine

The Protocol range is Byron & Harold’s premium collection, made to show the strength and polish of Western Australian regional wines. This 2020 Shiraz has all the richness you want from Margaret River Shiraz, but with the added benefit of a few years in bottle.

That bottle age matters. Rather than buying a very young red and waiting for it to settle, this gives you a Shiraz that is already moving into a smoother, more complete drinking window. It still has plenty of fruit, but the tannins feel more rounded and the savoury notes are beginning to build.

At the normal $60 RRP, this sits firmly in premium Shiraz territory. At this one-off clearance price, it becomes one of the best value WA red wine specials we have been able to offer.

Serving and Cellaring 

Serve: 16 to 18°C

If the bottle has been sitting at warm room temperature, give it 15 minutes in the fridge before serving. This helps keep the fruit bright and the tannins smooth.

Decant: 30 to 45 minutes is ideal. The wine has some bottle age, but a little air will still help the dark fruit, spice and savoury detail open up.

Cellaring: Drinking well now, or enjoy over the next few years as it develops more savoury, leather and spice complexity.

Is the 2020 vintage ready to drink now?
Yes. One of the best things about this wine is that it already has a few years of bottle age, so the tannins are softer and the fruit, oak and savoury notes are more integrated.

What does it taste like?
Expect dark plum, blackberry, ripe cherry, spice, cocoa, pepper and polished oak, with a smooth medium to full-bodied palate.

Is it a heavy Shiraz?
It has good depth and richness, but it is not written as a huge, overblown style. Think polished Margaret River Shiraz with fruit, spice, smooth tannins and balance.

Should I decant it?
A short decant is a good idea. Around 30 to 45 minutes will help the wine open up and show more of its dark fruit and savoury spice.
