Awards

93 Points, Winepilot

Winepilot describes Byron & Harold as a producer that should not fly under the radar, noting that they continue to release seriously good wines. The review highlights red and darker berries, graphite, truffle, florals and tobacco leaf, with excellent length, pinpoint focus and very fine tannins. It is expected to drink well over the next decade.

93 Points, Wine Companion

Wine Companion praises the wine’s ability to combine concentration, richness and a lithe nature. The review notes cassis, mulberry, mint and eucalyptus, with mahogany-tinged oak, blueberry, lavender tea, cinnamon, clove and fine silty tannins. It is described as graceful, fuller figured, carefully balanced and refined.

Tasting Notes

Colour: Deep purple-maroon with dark crimson depth.

Aromatics: Cassis, mulberry and red berries, with blueberry, mint, eucalyptus, graphite, florals, tobacco leaf and a hint of truffle. Subtle mahogany-like oak, cinnamon and clove add polish and complexity.

Palate: Concentrated yet refined, with blackcurrant, mulberry and blueberry fruit supported by cool-climate freshness. Fine silty tannins draw the wine long and tight, while oak sits in the background as a classy seasoning rather than dominating the fruit.

Finish: Long, focused and savoury, with lingering cassis, graphite, mint, spice and fine Cabernet tannin.

About the Wine

The Partners range is Byron & Harold’s premium regional collection, and this 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon shows exactly why the label is worth watching. It is made from Great Southern fruit and carries the coolness, fragrance and structure that make the region so well suited to Cabernet.

The 2021 vintage also gives the wine a real advantage. Rather than being a brand-new Cabernet that needs years to settle, this has already had time in bottle. The fruit is still vibrant, but the tannins, oak and savoury notes are beginning to come together beautifully.

At the normal $60 RRP, this is firmly in premium Cabernet territory. At this one-off clearance price, it becomes one of the strongest value WA Cabernet offers we have had.

Viticulture and Winemaking

Producer: Byron & Harold
Range: The Partners
Wine: Cabernet Sauvignon
Vintage: 2021
Region: Great Southern, Western Australia
Variety: Cabernet Sauvignon
Style: Dry red wine
Body: Medium to full-bodied
Closure: Screw cap

Winemaking notes:

  • Fruit crushed into static fermenters
  • A proportion of whole berries retained during fermentation
  • Twice daily pumpovers
  • A percentage of the wine remained on skins after fermentation
  • Pressed to French oak barriques for maturation
  • Final blend selected from individual barrels

Serving and Cellaring

Serve: 16 to 18°C

If the bottle has been sitting at warm room temperature, give it 15 minutes in the fridge before serving. This helps keep the fruit bright and the tannins smooth.

Decant: 45 to 60 minutes is ideal. A little air will help the cassis, graphite, mint and savoury oak complexity open up.

Cellaring: Drinking beautifully now with a decant, or cellar for up to 8 to 10 years if you enjoy more savoury, developed Cabernet characters.

Food Pairing Suggestions

  • Chargrilled rib-eye or scotch fillet
  • Roast lamb with rosemary and garlic
  • Slow-cooked beef cheek or short ribs
  • Beef Wellington
  • Mushroom and thyme ragu
  • Aged cheddar, Comté or manchego
  • Woodfired pizza with mushrooms, olives and prosciutto
