Dukes Magpie Hill Cabernet 2022

ray jordan 95 point score for a wine, in a logo

Bold Flavours | Smooth | Excellent Structure

If you love Cabernet with real finesse, this is the one. The Magpie Hill Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon 2022 is Duke’s top Cabernet release from Porongurup, built on cool-climate structure, pristine fruit and a long, polished finish. It’s packed with blackcurrant and bramble fruit, layered with cedar and savoury spice, then pulled tight by fine, silty tannins and a refreshing acid line that keeps it lively rather than heavy.

This is serious Cabernet with a proper Great Southern signature. Powerful, composed and cellar-worthy, yet still a joy to drink now with a decent decant.

Why You Will Love It

  • Premium Porongurup Cabernet with fragrance, structure and length
  • Classic Cabernet flavours: cassis, blackberry, cedar and tobacco
  • Fine, silty tannins that feel polished and persistent
  • 17 months in 100% French oak adds depth and classy shape
  • Awarded by top reviewers for the 2022 vintage

Acclaim

  • 95 Points – Winepilot (Ray Jordan)
Interestingly this Cabernet is a Barossa clone which contrasts with the Houghton clone in another part of the vineyard. It certainly has created a more robust Cabernet, albeit with the imprint of the cooler climes of the Porongurups. There’s a wild mix of berries evident on the nose with a little oyster shell minerality and light cedar adding another dimension”

Tasting Notes

  • Aromatics: Cassis, blackberry and bramble with cedar, cigarbox, spice and savoury notes like saltbush and preserved plum.
  • Palate: Refined and complete, dark berries and blackcurrant drive the core, with cocoa, subtle anise and a mineral, oyster-shell style savouriness through the middle.
  • Finish: Long, silty and fresh, with tannins that stay fine and measured rather than drying.

Vintage 2022

A cool, wet winter set the season up beautifully, followed by a warm, dry summer. Lower yields delivered concentration, while the cooler Porongurup conditions helped retain natural acidity and perfume. The result is depth with finesse, not bulk.

FAQ 🧐

Is this a big, heavy Cabernet?
It’s powerful, but not heavy. The hallmark is finesse: fine tannins, fresh acidity and a long, clean finish.

Do I need to decant it?
It’s recommended. A decant unlocks the cedar, cassis and savoury complexity and smooths the tannin line.
